Remove/install front fenders - AR88.10-P-1000V

REMOVING Remove    
1 Open engine hood and raise to vertical position   AR88.40-P-1000V 
2 Remove bolts (13) Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
3 Remove left and right door sill molding   AR68.30-P-4100V
4 Remove inner fender rear section in left and right rear front fender (1)   AR88.10-P-1300V 
5.1 Remove windshield washer fluid reservoir When removing right fender (1) AR82.35-P-6000V
6 Loosen inner fender rear section in left and right rear front fender (1) until bolts (3, 5, 6) are accessible. NOTES See:↓  
    Remove/install inner fender in front fender AR88.10-P-1300V 
7 Loosen longitudinal member (8) from longitudinal member in front area with mounting wedge until nuts (9) are accessible NOTES Carefully unclip longitudinal member (8) Otherwise the longitudinal member paneling (8) can be damaged.  
    SPECIAL TOOL Fig 3
8 Unscrew nuts (9). Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
9 Unscrew bolts (3) from front bumper (4) Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
10 Unscrew bolt (5) from lamp unit mount (7) Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
11 Loosen bolt (6) on lamp unit bracket (7) Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
12 Remove bolts (2) Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
13 Remove front fender (1) NOTES Carefully remove front fender (1) to prevent damaging pain on adjacent detachable body components and front fender (1).  
14.1 Drill out rivets (14) and remove retaining strip (15) from front fender (1) When replacing front fender (1)  
    Rechargeable drill/screwdriver *WH58.30-Z-1007-20A 
INSTALLING Install     
15.1 Glue new spacer (10) to front fender (1). When replacing front fender (1)  
16.1 Rivet retaining strip (15) with front fender (1) When replacing front fender (1)  
    COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS Hand riveter *WH58.30-Z-1003-29A 
17 Position front fender (1) at installation location and fasten with nuts (9) and bolts (3, 5, 6) NOTES Carefully position front fender (1) to prevent damaging point on adjacent detachable body components and on front fender (1).  
18 Adjust transition and gap between front fender (1) and front door and A-pillar and tighten bolts (2). IMPORTANT The transition in the lower area of the front fender (1) to the door can also be adjusted via the adjustment screws (11) screw-in depth.  
    Gap between front door to fender and gap between fender to A-pillar *BE60.00-P-1002-01L 
    SPECIAL TOOL Fig 4
19 Tighten nuts (9) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA88.10-P-1003-01B 
20 Lower vehicle with lifting platform    
21 Adjust gap between front fender (1) and engine hood and tighten bolts (13) Gap, engine hood to fender *BE60.00-P-1001-01L 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA88.10-P-1002-01B 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Fig 4
22 Raise vehicle with lifting platform   AR00.60-P-1000V
23 Tighten bolts (3, 5, 6) on front bumper (4) and lamp unit mount (7) IMPORTANT Observe transition between front fender (1) and front lamp and front bumper (4).  
24.1 Install washer fluid reservoir of windshield washer system When installing right front fender (1). AR82.35-P-6000V
25 Install inner fender rear section in left and right front fender (1).   AR88.10-P-1300V 
26 Fasten inner fender front section in left and right front fender (1). IMPORTANT See:↓  
    Remove/install inner fender in front fender AR88.10-P-1300V 
27 Fasten longitudinal member paneling (8)    
28 Install left and right door sill molding   AR68.30-P-4100V
29 Repair paint damage on visible screw heads with touch-up paint pen    
30 Close engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000V 
31.1 Install model plate on front fender (1) When replacing front fender (1) on model 171.442 up to production date 2.10.05. AR88.10-P-1001V
