Inspect hydraulic valve clearance compensating elements - AR05.00-P-2010GZA (ML350, ML550, GL450, GL550)

INSPECT Checking    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing  when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
Inspect special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
Wear protective gloves.

1 Check engine oil level; correct where required    
2 Start engine and bring to operating temperature IMPORTANT Coolant temperature 60 to 80°C  
3 Remove cylinder head covers Right cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5012GZA
    Left cylinder head cover AR01.20-P-5013GZA
4 Turn engine at crankshaft until cam on the valve clearance compensation element to be checked is standing on the base circle IMPORTANT Do not turn engine against direction of engine rotation. Compensation elements not lying against the base circle of the cam must be replaced.  
5 Press down the compensation element with a suitable tool (6) NOTES Do not use steel tools, as these can damage the surface of the compensation element.
IMPORTANT Press the compensation element down with the normal force of the hand.
If the pressure applied is too strong, the compensation element seems to move down, but this is in fact because the valve is opening.
IMPORTANT If a compensation element moves down too much compared with the other compensation elements:

    Replace the compensating element
IMPORTANT If several compensation elements move down, check the oil duct and oil feed bores of the compensation elements for contamination.

6 Install in the reverse order
