Function requirements
- C. 15R On
- The Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND) is authorized and working correctly.
- No fault in antenna system (radio function)
- Audio-CD is inserted (for CD mode)
With "circuit 15R Off", the MOST subscribers are activated by switching on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The following audio functions can be selected using the "Audio" menu item
- "Radio"
- "Weatherband" (with model 463.249/271)
- "CD audio"
- "Satellite digital audio radio" (SDAR) (satellite radio) (with model 463.249/271)
The audio functions can be controlled, selected or set using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Control panels of COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with model 463.247/248/254/270/303/340/341 with code (EL1) LINGUATRONIC voice control system or with model 463.249/271 as of model year 07.5, YoM 07)
With model 463.249/271 it is only possible to operate audio, telephone and navigation components via the multifunction steering wheel button groups as of model year 07.5, YoM 07.
The audio mode consists of the following component functions:
- Radio mode function sequence (amplitude modulated (AM)/frequency modulated (FM))
- Function sequence for audio-CD mode
- Audio output function sequence
Radio mode function sequence (AM/FM)
The radio tuner is integrated in the COMAND, operating, display and controller unit. The radio tuner comes with the following functions:
- Amplitude-modulated tuner
- Frequency-modulated dual tuner with phase diversity (ultra-short wave)
- Traffic Announcement (TA), evaluation of traffic information radio channel over Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for dynamic route guidance if navigation is being used (except model 463.249/271)
- Radio data system (RDS) (except model 463.249/271)
- Radio Broadcast Data Standard (RBDS), weatherband (with model 463.249/271)
With model 463.254/303, the radio and cell phone antenna (A28) and, with model 463.247/248/249/270/271/340/341, the amplifier module 1, window antenna, receives the radio-frequency (RF) signals for ultra-short wave and medium wave.
Modulated onto these HF signals are music, voice or data signals. The signals are then sent via the coaxial lines to the integrated radio tuners of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The radio tuners demodulate the HF signals, in other words they separate the useful information (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible).
Radio data system (RDS) or Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS) function
As well as the radio program, many radio stations also broadcast digital information such as the station name and traffic program identification. This information is evaluated by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and is displayed on the display if the following requirements are met:
- An RDS or RBDS station has been tuned to
- The "RDS or RBDS" function is activated
FM antenna diversity, function
If reception faults occur while driving, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit tries to receive the selected station on an alternative frequency with the aid of the radio tuner and switches over accordingly if reception improves. Similarly a switchover is made depending on reception quality between the rear window FM antennas. The function runs automatically.
Function sequence for audio-CD mode
User navigation for controlling CD functionality of the 6-disk CD changer with "Single Slot" and for displaying supplemental information is shown via the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. Audio-CDs (also MP3 format) can be played.
The CD menu and the track menu, which are stored on the CD inserted, and the occupied CD slots are displayed in the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. Slots "1" to "6" are numbered consecutively. For this reason, the function scope and menu display are dependent on each respective medium. In the event that one of the two menus is missing on the CD, the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit provides the corresponding "SOFT KEY" with a gray background.
Audio output
With model 463.249/271 or with model 463.248/270/341 with code (E66) Sound system (Harman/Kardon) the audio output is provided by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the sound system amplifier to the speakers.
With model 463.248/270/341 without code (E66) Sound system (Harman/Kardon) and model 463.247/254/303/340 the audio is output over the speakers by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via direct lines.
