Function requirements, general 

Comfort displays in general 

The comfort displays provide a fast overview of the information, which is not required to operate the vehicle.

The convenience display comprises the following subfunctions:

Outside temperature indicator function sequence 

The wheel speeds determined by the rpm sensors are read in by the ESP control unit and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN.

The instrument cluster receives the values and calculates the current speed from them.

The signals from the coolant temperature sensor are read in by the ME-SFI control unit ME or by the CDI control unit and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the drive train CAN.

The outside temperature is determined via the outside temperature indicator temperature sensor, is read in by SAM and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

In order to determine a correct value of outside temperature, the following parameters must also be taken into account:

The display appears as follows depending on the values: Coolant temperature T < 60 °C:

If the instrument cluster is activated, the current outside temperature value is always shown damped.

A rise in outside temperature value is permitted.

Coolant temperature T ≥ 60 °C:

At speeds of v < 20 km/h (coming from higher values) the display is only changed if the measured outside temperature drops.

A rise in outside temperature value is not permitted.

At speeds between v = 20 km/h and v = 45 km/h increasing outside temperatures are displayed damped after a delay period of t = 3 minutes.

At speeds of v > 45 km/h increasing outside temperatures are displayed damped after a delay period of t = 90 s.

IMPORTANT With varying speeds the outside temperature is displayed corresponding to the speed ranges described above.

Coolant temperature T ≥ 60 °C and circuit 61 Off:

A delay period (6 times engine running time, maximum t = 1 h) prevents an apparently increased outside temperature being displayed for reason of engine waste heat. A rise in outside temperature value is not permitted during this delay period.

If the coolant temperature is T < 60 °C again the delay period is immediately canceled and rising outside temperatures are permitted.

IMPORTANT If the instrument cluster receives implausible or no values from the coolant temperature sensor, the display of outside temperature is controlled as if the coolant temperature were T ≥ 60 °C.

The display of outside temperature takes place via the outside temperature indicator (A1p4).

The display range lies between T = -40 °C and T = +85 °C or between T = -40 °F and T = +185 °F.

If the outside temperature exceeds or drops below the display range, the final value of the display range is shown up to the maximum or minimum display value.

The display value is calculated by interrogating the outside temperature 4 times. When the outside temperature indicator is active and the CAN bus is inactive this is woken up every t = 3 min. and the 4 values of outside temperature are read in.

If a value is faulty this is replaced by the last valid value. If no valid values arrive for t = 2 s,

T = +85 °C or T = +185 °F is displayed.

If valid values arrive again for t = 2 s, the outside temperature determined is displayed again.

Function sequence, time display 

The time is displayed digitally via the electronic clock (A1p6). The following alternatives exist for setting the time:

Manual setting of time 

On vehicles without code (EU1) COMMAND, APS the time can only be set manually via the multifunction steering wheel button group. The signals are read in voltage-coded by the LIN converter, converted, passed on via LIN to the steering column tube module and transmitted to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN.

Auto-adjust of time 

On vehicles with code (EU1) COMMAND, APS the time in the instrument cluster synchronizes automatically with COMMAND. The instrument cluster receives the time from COMMAND via the interior CAN.

Instrument cluster illumination function sequence 

The illumination is switched on automatically when the instrument cluster is activated.

If the instrument cluster is activated by opening the driver door, the illumination switches off again after t = 30 s.

If an active warning is displayed then the run-on time extends by a further t = 2 minutes.

The brightness of the instrument illumination and the multifunction display (A1p13) is automatically adapted to the brightness conditions of the interior by an integrated photo transistor.

In addition the information from the lights-on sensor is also evaluated for the illumination of the instrument cluster. This information is read in by the overhead control panel control unit and passed on via the interior CAN.

The brightness can be readjusted corresponding to the individual requirements using the instrument illumination variable resistor (A1r1).
