MODEL 211.0 /2 up to 31.5.06 with CODE (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio with CODE (527) Navigation module for COMAND
The navigation processor for the radio control panel and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio, is integrated into the operating unit. With the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS (with navigation), the external navigation module is referred to as a navigation processor (N41/1).
The navigation system route guidance (based on CD data) is supported significantly by voice output:
- Direction information
- Name of street at which to turn
For streets without names, the "compass direction" (north, south, east and west) is specified. The compass direction is omitted in the case of streets (e.g., in towns) which are designated by a name.
The voice data was originally stored as single word elements on the navigation CD-ROM. This data record is automatically transferred from the CD-ROM to the navigation processor (N41/1) and stored there. The navigation processor (N41/1) links these word segments into complete instructions or information and generates corresponding audio frequency signals. The audio frequency signals generated in this way are relayed as necessary via the MOST to the audio signal processing in the audio gateway control unit (N93/1), amplified there and then output via the vehicle speakers.
Several driving recommendations coming in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.
Manual voice data loading from CD-ROM
The system has 5 different languages:
- German
- English
- French
- Italian
- Spanish
In the menu "SERV/Speech", the data of the voice output of the CD-ROM can be transmitted to the navigation processor (N41/1) where they are stored in a non-volatile memory.
Loading a language requires several seconds and changes the voice output as well as the menu texts on the display. Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.
During the time a language is being loaded from the CD-ROM, it is necessary to avoid severe vibrations (e.g. on bad roads).
Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.
Control of the navigation system voice output
If a major emergency message is transmitted, the audio output consists only of this message as this has absolute priority and must not be interrupted by any other message.
If the volume is altered during a navigation system voice output, this is regarded as the absolute level for the next navigation system voice output.
For the volume setting, the following options exist:
- Setting of a minimum differentiation between the audio source volume and the navigation voice output
- Setting of a minimum differentiation between the navigation voice output and the audio source
Setting options:
- If the volume of the audio source is less than the navigation voice output to be heard, the level of the audio source does not change.
- If the level of the audio source is the same or louder, it is set below the level of the navigation voice output to be heard at that moment during the voice output of the navigation system. As soon as the voice output is ended, the volume of the audio source is restored to the original setting prior to the voice output.
- Both the audio source and the navigation voice output can have the same volume, or the navigation voice output can be faded out completely.
The navigation voice output has the basic values minimum and maximum level.
The volume cannot be set below the minimum level or above the maximum level during the navigation system voice output.
In this case, after the navigation system voice output, the minimum level or the maximum level is then set for the next navigation system voice outputs.
Muting voice output
The navigation voice output can be muted by pressing the "MUTE" button for t ≤ 2 seconds during a voice output.
The mute feature applies only for the current voice output. If the "MUTE" button is operated for t2 s, a window appears in the NAVI screen with the content "Driving Instructions Muted". Activating voice output:
- By repeatedly pressing the "MUTE" button
- By pressing the "NAV-Repeat" button
- By switching the system off and on
- By switching the navigation off and on
- Automatically at the end of the current route guidance
If a traffic message is announced at the same time as a navigation system voice output is heard, the traffic message is muted when the "MUTE" button is pressed once, and the navigation system voice output is muted when the button is pressed a second time.
The Mute state for a traffic announcement only applies to the current announcement.
