Telephone mode, function - GF82.85-P-2007TA

COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) in telephone mode in vehicles with code (813) voice control system (VCS) and with code (855) TELE AID 

The telephone system can be operated as follows:

Function 

The telecommunications control unit (N112) transmits and receives the telephone radio signals via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) with model 211.0 or the telephone antenna (A2/22) with model 211.2 upon request from the telephone handset (A34), for example. In portable CTEL mode the signals are transmitted via the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the telephone interface (A34/4).

The E-net compensator (A28/3) has the task of compensating for losses caused by the higher transmission frequency of the E-net by means of amplification. The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) shows the destination field strengths in 5 grades when the telephone is in its ready status. All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST).

IMPORTANT The CTEL (A34/6) needs an interface to communicate with the MOST subscribers. This function is taken care of by the telephone interface (A34/4).

The battery of the portable CTEL (A34/6) is charged via the telephone interface (A34/4). The battery is charged automatically as soon as the telephone interface (A34/4) is active. This is irrespective of whether the portable CTEL (A34/6) is switched on or off.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:

Voice control system (VCS) in vehicles with code (813) voice control system (VCS) 

The voice control system control unit (A35/11) is connected to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). In vehicles with code (813) voice control system (VCS) it is used to operate the telephone and for certain audio operations (e.g. radio station search function, CD track change function, etc.). The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. It is possible to listen to the telephone call via the vehicle speakers.

Hands-free mode 

During a telephone conversation, it must be possible for the user to conduct this conversation via the hands-free system. For this the hands-free system microphone group (A67/b1) is located in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67). From there the microphone signals are passed on directly to the telecommunications control unit (N112), digitized and sent via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1).

Once there the signals are processed again and sent to the vehicle's speakers. Hands-free is controlled by pressing a button "microphone ON" or "microphone OFF" on the operating unit.

Telephone variants 

The following special equipment is available for telephone operation:

Telediagnosis function 

IMPORTANT Telediagnosis and MB information calls can only be made with the extended version of the telecommunications control unit (N112) "High".

The "Telediagnosis" function allows a roadside assistance call to be made to DaimlerChrysler customer service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)). The position of the vehicle and vehicle identification information (model, year of construction, engine) and information about the current vehicle status (mileage, engine temperature, battery voltage, displayed fault and warning messages, etc.) are transmitted to the central office. Shortly after triggering (e.g. in case of breakdown) a voice connection is automatically made to DaimlerChrysler customer service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)). If necessary, DaimlerChrysler Customer Service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)) will notify the nearest workshop in order to provide roadside assistance. The telediagnosis service can only be used if it has been enabled by DaimlerChrysler customer service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)) beforehand. The central gateway control unit (N93) is the interface between the interior CAN (CAN-B) and the engine compartment CAN (CAN-C). It transmits diagnosis data from the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) to the data link connector (X11/4).

The central gateway control unit (N93) is required for telediagnosis. It collects and processes the status messages and fault messages.

Transferring MB-Info call 

The telediagnosis button (S93/6s2) with the wrench symbol is located in the center armrest, left of the telephone handset (A34). If the telediagnosis button (S93/6s2) is pressed for longer than t = 2 s, the message "Establishing telediagnosis call" appears in the instrument cluster (A1). If the voice connection to CAC is set up, the message "telediagnosis connection active" appears. When the roadside assistance call is complete, the message is no longer displayed on the instrument cluster (A1).

MB information call function 

When an MB information call is made, an automatic connection is established to DaimlerChrysler customer service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)). This pure voice connection can be used to request all the available information related to the vehicle at no charge.

The following services are available:

Transferring MB-Info call 

The information call is triggered by pressing the MB-Info button (S93/6s1) to the right of the telephone handset (A34). After confirming with the "OK button" a voice connection is automatically established to DaimlerChrysler customer service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)). The operator at DaimlerChrysler customer service (Customer Assistance Center (CAC)) then accepts the questions.

In vehicles with code (383) MB phone "Standard" in console on right side of tower with integral TELE AID emergency call system, hands-free system and antenna 

The TELE AID emergency call system is based on an emergency call transmit and receive system via the D mobile radio network and position determining via the global positioning system. An emergency call can be triggered manually or automatically (crash signal). Manual triggering takes place via the operation of the SOS/ATA [EDW] switch group (S93/3). The emergency call is transmitted via the telephone antenna (A2/49a1) with model 211.0 or via the telephone antenna (A2/22) with model 211.2 and relayed to the emergency call center, decoded and transmitted to the responsible command center. In case of emergency the system has the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55).

IMPORTANT The SOS emergency call telegram is transmitted via the D mobile radio network.

Functional reliability 

2 telephone antennas, the left backup antenna, emergency call system (A2/54) and the right backup antenna, emergency call system (A2/55), are available for providing a reliable D-net connection.

The emergency call system in vehicles with code (855) TELE AID must have diagnosis capability. The telecommunications control unit (N112) is connected directly to the central gateway control unit (N93) via the interior CAN (CAN-B).

SMS text messages 

Prerequisites for this are:

SMS creating/SMS editing 

In the basic service menu the "Mail" button leads to the creation, dispatch and administration of text messages (short message service - SMS).

There are the following options:

The characters are entered with the predictive speller or via the 12-key keypad (same as for portable CTEL (A34/6)). Transmitting the SMS is also connected to these functions. A receiver can be entered or selected in the telephone book.

Data safety, SMS buffer 

When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved. Although it may be that up to 4 characters go missing.

When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost.

The MB Portal represents yet another mobility and information service. The communication options (services) are combined here:

WAP function 

The telephone operation and SMS operation have been supplemented by a WAP function with reduced internet status. Here it is only possible to access the desired information directly within the service menu supplied, as well as to send and receive an e-mail.

Internet function 

It is possible to send and receive e-mails and access any number of Internet pages (surfing) by accessing the Internet via the MB portal and using an extended online function. Text can be shown on the display and edited on the control panel. The Internet messages transmitted by the telephone transmit and receive stations are made available by a WAP/internet browser integrated in the telecommunications control unit (N112) and transmitted to the central computer in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via MOST and vice versa.

The constant communication between these two computers must be guaranteed for the Telematics function.

Radio module 

A GSM 900 module or GSM 1800 module ensures that all global GSM networks can be accessed.

The GSM unit is integrated in the telecommunications control unit (N112) and can be replaced by another GSM module.
