Passenger-side seat occupied recognition, general
The passenger-side seat occupied recognition detects whether the front passenger seat is occupied.
The passenger-side seat occupied recognition consists of the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition (model 204.0/9 up to 28.2.11 and model 204.3)
- Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition (model 204.0/9 as of 1.3.11)
- Function sequence for outputting status and fault messages

Occupation of the front passenger seat by a person or a child seat is determined by the weight, which is applied to the front passenger seat. The weight is determined using a pressure measurement from the seat occupied recognition pressure sensor (B48/4) in a seat mat filled with silicone. The force that is introduced via the seat belt is measured by the belt tension sensor (B48/3) so that weight classification corrections can be made if necessary.
The weight sensing system (WSS) control unit (N110) uses these two values to classify the applied weight and then sends the signal over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) and from there over the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10).
The following conditions are defined in accordance with this weight classification:
- Seat unoccupied:
The front passenger airbag unit, the front passenger sidebag unit and the front passenger emergency tensioning retractor unit are disabled.
- Seat occupied:
- Light weight (e.g. child seat) and seat belt fastened:
The front passenger airbag unit is disabled.
- Person recognized:
The required restraint equipment is enabled.
- Light weight (e.g. child seat) and seat belt fastened:
Function sequence for front passenger seat occupied recognition

Occupation of the front passenger seat by a person or a child seat is determined by the weight, which is applied to the front passenger seat. The weight is determined via a pressure measurement in a seat mat filled with silicone. The pressure is measured by the WSS control unit (Weight Sensing System) (N2/13). The force that is introduced via the seat belt is measured by the belt tension sensor so that weight classification corrections can be made if necessary. Based on these two values, the WSS control unit classifies the applied weight and forwards the signal via seat occupation LIN (LIN E2) to the supplemental restraint system control unit.
The following conditions are defined in accordance with this weight classification:
- Seat unoccupied:
The front passenger airbag unit, the front passenger sidebag unit and the front passenger emergency tensioning retractor unit are disabled.
- Seat occupied:

The output of status and fault messages consists of the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence for actuation of automatic child seat recognition warning lamp (S6/1e1) (model 204.9, model 204.0 up to 28.2.11)
- Function sequence for actuation of automatic child seat recognition airbag off indicator lamp (N72/1e1) (model 204.3, model 204.0 as of 1.3.11)
- Function sequence for outputting fault messages

If a front passenger seat is recognized to be occupied, the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp is switched off. If the front passenger seat is not recognized as occupied, the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp remains switched off for as long as the seat is identified as unoccupied.
If a light weight is detected and the belt is also fastened, the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp is also switched on. The signal to switch the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp on or off is sent by the supplemental restraint system control unit via chassis CAN to the front SAM control unit. This switches the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp on or off over the instrument panel LIN (LIN 1).
Function sequence for actuation of automatic child seat recognition airbag off indicator lamp (model 204.3, model 204.0/2 as of 1.3.11)
The signal to switch the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp on or off is sent by the supplemental restraint system control unit via chassis CAN to the front SAM control unit. It switches the automatic child seat recognition airbag off indicator lamp on or off via instrument panel LIN.
Function sequence for outputting fault messages
The status of the supplemental restraint system control unit is sent by the supplemental restraint system control unit over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster (A1), which shows a corresponding message in the multifunction display (A1p13).
