Symbol and ambiance illumination in general

The symbol and ambiance illumination provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the indirect illumination of the vehicle interior.

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature consists of the following subfunctions:

Additional symbol illumination function requirements

Function sequence for symbol illumination

The following information is read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster for controlling the symbol and function illumination:

The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and sends it via interior CAN to the following control units to actuate the symbol illumination:

The radio or COMAND controller unit receives the circuit 58d signal and sends it to the following components via the telematics CAN:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components via instrument panel LIN:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:

The front SAM control unit sends the circuit 58d signal to the following control units via chassis CAN:

The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit reads in the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the drive train to the electronic selector lever module control unit (with transmission 722). The electronic selector lever module control unit reads in the circuit 58d signal and actuates the following components:

The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components via the steering LIN and the steering wheel electronics:

The automatic climate control and operating unit directly actuates the symbol illumination of the integrated controls and sends the circuit 58d signal via the climate control LIN to the rear automatic climate control operating unit (in model 204.0/2 with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning and code (954) Avantgarde or code (955) Elegance or model 204.9 with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning and code (876) Interior lights package).

The rear automatic air conditioning operating unit actuates the symbol illumination of the integrated controls.

The left front door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the following components.

Actuation via left door LIN:

Direct actuation:

The right front door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the following components.

Actuation via right door LIN:

Direct actuation:

Models 204.0/2/9:

The left rear door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the left rear power window switch

Models 204.0/2/9:

The right rear door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the right rear power window switch.

IMPORTANT The symbol illumination for the controls located on the overhead control panel control unit (with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof) is switched on with a brightness value of 100 % when one of the vehicle doors is opened regardless of whether the circuit 58d signal has been received. If the status of the vehicle doors no longer changes, the symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s. The opening or closing of a vehicle door while this time interval is running down causes it to start again. The symbol illumination is switched off immediately when the vehicle is locked. Actuation of the symbol illumination occurs in accordance with the status of the light sensor (without code (345) Rain sensor) or the status of the rain/light sensor (with code (345) Rain sensor) with circuit 15R ON. With circuit 15 OFF, the symbol illumination is actuated corresponding to the (bright) daytime level.

Function sequence for ambiance illumination

The ambiance illumination encompasses the actuation of different components for the indirect illumination of the footwells, instrument panel and vehicle doors.

The brightness can be adjusted using the instrument illumination brightness control.

The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN for controlling the ambiance illumination:

The front SAM control unit then transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination to the following control units via the interior CAN:

The front SAM control unit actuates the following ambiance illumination components:

On vehicles with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof, the overhead control panel control unit actuates the ambient lamp in the inside rearview mirror.

The left front door control unit actuates the following ambiance illumination components:

The right front door control unit actuates the following ambiance illumination components:

The left rear door control unit actuates the following ambiance illumination components:

The right rear door control unit actuates the following ambiance illumination components:

When the vehicle is unlocked using the central locking system, the ambiance illumination components are actuated with a dimmed brightness setting. If a front or rear door is now opened, the ambiance illumination components are actuated with a brightness setting that corresponds to 100%.

After the front or rear door is closed or if circuit 15R is switched on, the ambiance illumination components are actuated again with the current brightness setting. If the vehicle is locked using the central locking system, the ambiance illumination components are switched off immediately without dimming.
