MODIFICATION NOTES

4.8.06 Disconnect ground line - discontinued
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. -
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   -
1 Extend the adjustable steering column fully    
2 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position) NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.  
3 Remove engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105V
4 Detach heat shield Model 171.454/ 456 /473 AR46.10-P-0621VA 
5 Unscrew steering coupling bolt on lower steering shaft (25a) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-01E 
6 Push lower steering shaft (80a) upwards out of the steering coupling (25) NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) because the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to lateral forces and can be damaged as a result.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Turn the rack-and-pinion steering into the center position: ↓
 
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Insert bottom steering shaft (80a) fully into the steering coupling (25); pay attention to the studs of the steering coupling (25) and groove of the bottom steering shaft (80a). AR46.20-P-0600-01V 
7 Detach the locking plate (25f) from the steering coupling (25), in the process lift the lugs using a suitable tool IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut. Push on the locking plate (25f) until the lugs latch in the steering coupling (25).  
8 Remove steering wheel   AR46.10-P-0100V 
9 Remove steering column switch module   AR46.10-P-0200V 
10 Remove instrument cluster   AR54.30-P-6015V
11 Remove left cover under the instrument panel   AR68.10-P-1500V
12 Unclip electrical connector (b) of steering column switch module from jacket tube (71)    
13 Unplug electrical connector (37p) at electric steering lock control unit (N26/5).    
14 Disconnect cable ties of electrical lines for actuator motors on the mounting console IMPORTANTInstallation:  Install new cable ties.  
15 Disconnect steering column up/down motor connector and steering column in/out motor connector    
16 Detach cross strut    
17 Unscrew bottom bolt of mounting console (91b) to crossmember TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1004-03N 
18 Unscrew upper bolts of mounting console (91a) to crossmember IMPORTANTInstallation:  Do not tighten the upper bolts of the mounting console (91a) and lower bolt of the mounting console (91b) securely, the jacket tube (71) must remain movable. Tighten the upper bolts of the mounting console (91a) first and then the lower bolt of the mounting console (91b).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1005-03N 
19 Pull jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) upwards until the lug of the mounting console (81) has moved out of the bore of the bracket    
20 Push the jacket tube (71) with lower steering shaft (80a) downwards and remove through the footwell NOTES Do not use force, as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to forces applied from the side.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  If the boot has been pulled out of the firewall: ↓
 
    Lubricate the boot on the jacket tube in the area of the sealing surface and insert in the firewall from the footwell. Ensure that the continuous groove guarantees correct sealing. AR46.20-P-0600-01V 
    Klueber Polylub GLY 801 grease *BR00.45-Z-1046-06A 
21 Install in the reverse order
