MODIFICATION NOTES

10.11.04 Repair method updated All steps
REMOVING Remove    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by fingers being jammed or pinched  when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/rear-end door or sliding roof. When moving components, ensure that no body parts or limbs are within the operating range of moving parts. -
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being trapped  or crushed  when working on partially open Vario roof (stop mode) or in its closing area as a result of the Vario roof suddenly collapsing Secure Vario roof with a suitable special tool. -
1 Remove paneling from C-pillar upper section (5)   AR77.50-P-6763V 
2 Remove support for securing Vario roof intermediate position and move Vario roof in closing direction with soft top switch until the position of the C-pillar top sections (5) is approx. 75°. Then reinstall support

3 Unscrew nuts (2) and remove line bracket (19)    
4 Remove water drain hose (3) from inner corner bracket (8) of inner C-pillar seal (1)    
5 Remove expansion clip (4) on outer corner bracket (6) of inner C-pillar seal (1)    
6 Pull funnel insert (17) out of funnel shaped part (16) of inner C-pillar seal (1)    
7 Remove inner C-pillar seal (1) from C-pillar upper section (5) NOTES Carefully remove inner C-pillar seal (1) to prevent damaging C-pillar top section (5)  
CLEANING Cleaning     
8 Remove sealant residues from sealing surfaces of C-pillar upper section (5) and thoroughly clean sealing surfaces NOTES The sealing surfaces on the C-pillar upper section (5) should be free of dust and grease. Otherwise leakage is possible.
IMPORTANT Observe drying time for cleaning agent It is not necessary to clean the inner C-pillar seal (1) because it is always replaced after removal

INSTALLING Install     
9 Apply beads of sealant (arrows A) on outer corner element (6), upper corner element (7) and inner corner element (8) of inner C-pillar seal (1) NOTES The sealing surfaces of the inner C-pillar seal (1) should be free of grease and dust. Otherwise leakage is possible.
IMPORTANT Apply beads of sealant (arrows A) as shown. Diameter of sealant beads (arrows A) approx. 8 mm.

10 Remove support for securing intermediate position of Vario roof and close Vario roof with soft top switch until the Vario roof front section is open approx. 5 cm IMPORTANT Leave ignition switched on. This causes the Vario roof to remain in the stop mode for 7 minutes. The next step should be performed within this period of time. The Vario roof closes automatically after 7 minutes.

11 Apply sealant bead (9) along lateral section of inner C-pillar seal (1) on C-pillar top section (5)Apply sealant bead (9) to outer C-pillar seal (14)Apply sealant bead (9) at transition of outer C-pillar seal (14). IMPORTANT Position of sealant bead (9), see cross section (arrow B). Apply sealant bead (9) at height of end edge of retaining rail (11). Observe connection of sealant bead (9) to outer C-pillar seal (14) The course of the sealant should not be interrupted.
Diameter of sealant bead (9) min. 8 mm.

12 Move Vario roof to intermediate position and secure Then switch off ignition IMPORTANT Position of C-pillar top sections (1) approx. 90°. AR77.50-P-3000-01V

13 Apply sealant bead (10) to C-pillar top section (5) as shown IMPORTANT Position of sealant bead (10) see cross section (arrow C)
Fill transition with sealant on transition to sealant bead (9) as shown (arrow D). Observe connection of sealant bead (10) to outer C-pillar seal (9) The course of the sealant should not be interrupted.
Diameter of sealant bead (10) min. 8 mm.

14 Install inner corner element (8) on C-pillar top section (5) and then install outer corner element (6) on C-pillar top section (5) NOTES Shaped corner element (20) should be located above corner on C-pillar top section (5) as shown (arrow K). Otherwise leakage can occur later
IMPORTANT Install sealing base (12) behind retaining rail (11).
 
15 Press shaped funnel element (16) for inner C-pillar seal (1) into corresponding opening in C-pillar top section (5) NOTES Ensure that funnel lip (18) is seated correctly. Otherwise leakage can occur later  
16 Completely install funnel insert (17) in shaped funnel element (16) of inner C-pillar seal (1)    
17 Install expansion clip (4) IMPORTANT Replace damaged expansion clip (4).  
18 Install inner C-pillar seal (1) up to the upper corner bracket (7) on the C-pillar upper section (5) and press on by hand.    
19 Position line bracket (19) on installation location with corresponding electrical lines and tighten nuts (2) NOTES Press upper corner bracket (7) against C-pillar upper section (5) while tightening to prevent the upper corner bracket (7) from being twisted.
IMPORTANT Observe mounting marking for electrical line
 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA77.50-P-1007-01A 
20 Fasten upper corner bracket (7) of inner C-pillar seal (1) with sealing tape (15) as shown. IMPORTANT Length of sealing tape (15): 20 mm.  
    Sealing *BR00.45-Z-1050-01A 
21 Install sealing base (12) over retaining rail (11) as shown in cross section (F-F) and hold pressed in this position. Position mounting wedge (13) at an angle of 45° in the notch (arrow G) and push sealing base (12) over entire course of sealing rail (11) approx. half way over the retaining rail (11) by tilting the mounting wedge (13). NOTES The mounting wedge (13) should not have any sharp edges or sharp corners. Do not move along inner C-pillar seal (1) with the mounting wedge (13). Otherwise the inner C-pillar seal (1) can be damaged.

22 Reposition mounting wedge (13) and completely push downward behind retaining rail (11) as shown in cross section (F-F) NOTES The mounting wedge (13) should not have any sharp edges or sharp corners. Do not move along inner C-pillar seal (1) with the mounting wedge (13). Otherwise the inner C-pillar seal (1) can be damaged.

23 Optimize seat of inner C-pillar seal (1) in of retaining rail (11) by pulling and pressing    
24 Check inner C-pillar seal installed (1) in area of retaining rail (11) of C-pillar upper section (5) IMPORTANT Inner C-pillar seal (1) should run parallel to lateral section of unfinished edge (arrow H) on C-pillar top section (5)  
25 Check whether inner C-pillar seal (1) is positioned below the outer C-pillar seal (14) on the sealing joint (arrow E), if necessary correct seat of inner C-pillar seal (1).    
26 Install water drain hose (3) on inner corner bracket (8) of inner C-pillar seal (1)    
27 Remove excessive sealant from C-pillar upper section (5) and remove inner C-pillar seal (1)    
28 Install paneling on C-pillar upper section (5)   AR77.50-P-6763V 
29 Check whether outer C-pillar seal (1) is seated correctly on C-pillar top section (5)    
30 Perform rain test
