Remove/install steering column tube - AR46.10-P-0400GZ

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units. Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100°C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply. AS91.00-Z-0001-01A

NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts All models AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 Position steering wheel horizontal IMPORTANT Front wheels in straight-ahead position.  
2 Separate steering coupling at the steering shaft IMPORTANT Working in the engine compartment: Only detach the upper connection between the drag link and center steering shaft (4).
Place the drag link out of the working area.

    Remove steering coupling
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace bolt

3 Move the steering column in to the full extent and move out the driver seat to the full extent    
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury  caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

4 Disconnect battery ground line   AR54.10-P-0003GZ
5 Remove driver airbag unit   AR91.60-P-0660GZ
6 Remove steering wheel   AR46.10-P-0100GZ 
7 Remove instrument cluster   AR54.30-P-6015GZ
8 Remove jacket tube switching module   AR54.25-P-2800-01TX
9 Remove cover below dashboard on left   AR68.10-P-1500GZ
10 Detach electrical connector (3) downwards off steering column tube (1) IMPORTANT Press catch tabs (arrows A) and unlatch electrical connector (3) downwards (arrow B).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure that the electrical connector (3) is latched properly and is aligned. Otherwise the steering column tube module cannot be installed.
 
11 Pull off air outlet nozzle (5)    
12 Disconnect lower electrical connectors (2) from steering column tube (1) IMPORTANT On vehicles with electrically adjustable steering column, code 441.  
13 Remove bolt (6) from rear of steering column tube (1) IMPORTANT Support the steering column tube (1).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1002-03J 
14 Remove bolts (7) IMPORTANT Support the steering column tube (1).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1001-03J 
15 Detach steering column tube (1) carefully from the dashboard at the positioning spigots (8) and pull forwards slightly (arrows C and D), in the process guide the center steering shaft (4) out of the shaft bearing (10) (arrow G) IMPORTANT Do not damage positioning spigot (8).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Align center steering shaft (4) with the contact surface (11) in the shaft bearing (10).
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Do not exert any pressure on the shaft bearing (10) with the center steering shaft (4) otherwise this can be pressed out of the partition wall.
 
16 Push the steering column tube (1) and center steering shaft (4) carefully back into the dashboard and remove downwards out of the dashboard (arrows E and F) IMPORTANTRemoval:  For better removal, fold brake pedal upwards, press bolt out of the brake pedal beforehand. See ↓  
    Remove/install brake pedal
IMPORTANT Do not damage components in the dashboard.

17 Install in the reverse order    
18 Perform basic programming   AR00.19-P-0200GZ
