The supercharger makes it possible to achieve an increase in engine torque (engine power output) particularly in the lower engine speed range.
The inducted air is compressed in the supercharger and cooled down in the charge air cooler. The cylinder charge level is increased by the compressed intake air (charge air). The corresponding fuel quantity for the increased air mass is measured by the ME control unit.
The intake/boost pressure is detected by the pressure sensor (intake manifold) and a matching voltage signal is relayed to the ME control unit.
The boost pressure is controlled on the basis of the map and load by the ME control unit by means of the recirculated air flap actuator. In the full load range, a maximum boost pressure is built up (air recirculation flap closed).
Boost pressure control is dependent on:
- Engine speed
- Load requirement (driver)
- The safety functions of engine control, such as anti-knock control, transmission overload protection and catalytic convertor overheating protection
