Reversing camera (RFK), function - GF54.65-P-0005G

Function requirements 

General information 

The backup camera system should assist the driver visually while maneuvering when backing up.

The backup camera system is comprised of several subfunctions These are:

Activate function sequence of backup camera 

If the backup camera is activated by engaging reverse gear, the backup camera power supply module takes over the power supply of the backup camera in the rear-end door.

The backup camera then transmits an analog video picture back to the backup camera voltage supply module.

The backup camera power supply module connects the video signal through and transfers the video picture via a screened coaxial line on to the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit.

Via the coaxial line the video signal is transmitted from the reversing camera power supply module to the TV tuner, before it is lead via another coaxial connection to the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The COMMAND operating, display and controller unit presents the video pictures of the back up camera in the display as soon as it receives the digital signal "Reverse gear engaged" via the interior CAN. The electrical signal produced for transmission position "R" by the electronic selector lever module control unit is transmitted to the EIS [EZS] control unit via the drive train CAN.

As a result of this the communication "Reverse gear engaged" is passed on from the EIS [EZS] control unit to the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit via the interior CAN. The backup camera power supply module is activated by the electronic selector lever module control unit via the discrete signal "Reverse gear engaged".

As a result of this the current video picture of the surroundings of rear area appears in FBAS [Composite Video Baseband Signal] format in the display of the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit with a delay period of approx. t = 500 ms.

IMPORTANT means Composite Video Baseband Signal. This is an analog video signal which combines all relevant information (e.g. color and brightness values etc.) in just one signal.

The COMMAND operating, display and controller unit also shows permanently a warning message at the bottom edge of the picture which draws the driver's attention to the fact that he should not disregard the actual events in the surroundings of the vehicle while maneuvering.

The backup camera in the rear-end door is positioned so that it functions optimally when the rear-end door is closed. If the rear-end door is opened, this does not render the function of the backup camera system inoperative, but results in the video picture no longer representing the desired rear area.

A trailer does not influence the function of the backup camera system. The rear area continues to be shown in the display of the display of the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit. It is particularly the case with larger trailers and the associated restriction in vision that one does not have a full view of events at the rear of one's own vehicle.

Function sequence of disabling the backup camera system 

There are several alternatives available to the driver for bringing the operation of the system to an end:

The backup camera system is mainly disabled by the driver. In USA ONLY vehicles however the "E-Call" and "Roadside Assistance" services lead to an immediate deactivation of the system.

If, for example, a phone call is received while the backup camera system is activated, then this does not lead to the termination of the backup camera system. In this case however a pop-up message via the video picture is faded in by the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit which is however faded out again immediately after taking the call.

IMPORTANT If a malfunction occurs in the system, then the COMMAND operating, display and controller unit itself brings to an end the operation of the backup camera system.
