REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of explosion  from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury  through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear protective gloves, acid-resistant clothing and safety glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
1 Disconnect ground cable of battery   AR54.10-P-0003I
NOTES Notes on battery All models AH54.10-P-0001-01A
IMPORTANT Notes on AGM battery Model 215 as of 1.1.01. AH54.10-P-0002-01A
2 Remove rear bumper   AR88.20-P-2200N
3 Remove trailer hitch socket housing   AR31.19-P-1350NA 
4 Remove operating lever for mechanically swiveling trailer hitch   AR31.11-P-8010M 
5 Remove trailer recognition control unit IMPORTANT Do not disconnect electrical connectors. AR31.19-P-1300N 
6.1 Remove hydraulic pump for remote trunk closing IMPORTANT Only models 215, 220 with remote trunk closing (HDFS) code 881b.
IMPORTANT Put hydraulic pump for remote trunk closing to one side. Do not disconnect electrical and hydraulic lines.

7 Remove rear seat cushion IMPORTANT Right-hand rear seat cushion only. AR91.12-P-1020N
8 Remove rear seat backrest    
9 Remove rear SAM control unit (N10/8) IMPORTANT Put rear SAM control unit (N10/8) to one side. Do not disconnect electrical connectors. AR54.21-P-1259I
10.1 Unscrew brown line (br) with round cable lug from ground shielding CAN and rear SAM (W50/2) IMPORTANT Vehicles up to ident no. A016836 only.  
11 Unclip dark-blue fuse carrier (2) of wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1) from rear fuse box (F4) IMPORTANT Two fuse carriers.  
12 Remove white, 2-pin coupling (3) from wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1) from plug position K2 of rear fuse and relay module (K40/5)    
13 Remove black, 6-pin coupling (4) from plug position 1 of rear SAM control unit (N10/8)    
14.1 Remove white line (ws) and green line (gn) from black, 6-pin coupling (4) of vehicle's own wiring harness IMPORTANT Vehicles up to ident no. A016836. 
IMPORTANT White line (ws) from plug position 5, green line (gn) from plug position 6.
 
14.2 Remove brown line (br) and brown/red line (br/ rt) from black, 6-pin coupling (4) of vehicle's own wiring harness IMPORTANT Vehicles as of ident no. A016837 only. 
IMPORTANT Brown line (br) from plug position 5, brown/red line from (br/rt) plug position 6.
 
15 Separate wiring harness for trailer hitch (1) from vehicle's own wiring harness and guide from the rear through the cable duct into the luggage compartment    
16 Unclip cable branch-off line for operating lever with black, 4-pin coupling from wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1) at rear end center assembly    
17 Unscrew brown line (br) with round cable lug from ground (right taillamp in luggage compartment (W7/1))    
18 Remove grommet (5) from wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1)    
19 Loosen harness for trailer hitch socket (1) and pull out to the rear through the body opening under the right taillamp IMPORTANT Avoid damage due to sharp body edges.  
20 Install in the reverse order IMPORTANT Pay attention to correct and chafe-free routing of the wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1).  
21 Carry out function check of mechanically swiveling trailer hitch   AR31.19-P-1450M 
22 Perform function test of light signals at the trailer hitch socket.
