REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of explosion  from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns  from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury  through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear protective gloves, acid-resistant clothing and safety glasses. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
1 Disconnect ground cable of battery   AR54.10-P-0003I
NOTES Notes on battery All models AH54.10-P-0001-01A
IMPORTANT Notes on AGM battery Model 220.028 with CODE (450) Taxi version.
Models 220.070/075/175/178/875/878 as of 1.1.01.

2 Remove rear bumper   AR88.20-P-2200MA
3 Remove trailer hitch socket housing IMPORTANT Only unscrew 13-pin trailer hitch socket (X58) and remove tie strap. AR31.19-P-1350M 
4 Remove operating lever for mechanically swiveling trailer hitch   AR31.11-P-8010M 
5.1 Remove hydraulic pump for remote trunk closing Only model 220 with CODE (881b) remote trunk closing (HDFS).
IMPORTANT Put hydraulic pump for remote trunk closing to one side. Do not disconnect electrical and hydraulic lines.

6 Remove rear seat backrest Models 220.0 /1 except CODE (223b) electrically adjustable rear bench seat, except CODE (224c) electrically adjustable individual rear seats, with seat ventilation, heated seats and memory package. AR91.12-P-1620MA
    Models 220.0/1 with CODE (223b) electrically adjustable rear bench seat. AR91.12-P-1620M
    IMPORTANT Only right-hand rear seat backrest.
MODELS 220.0, 1 with CODE (224c) electrically adjustable rear single seats, with seat ventilation, seat heater and memory package

    IMPORTANT Only right-hand rear seat backrest.  
7 Remove rear seat control unit Model 220.0 /1 with code (223b) electrically adjustable rear bench seat. with CODE (224c) electrically adjustable individual rear seats, with seat ventilation, heated seats and memory package.
IMPORTANT Put rear seat control unit to one side Do not disconnect electrical connectors.

8 Remove rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay box IMPORTANT Put rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay box to one side. Do not disconnect electrical connectors. AR54.21-P-1259I
9 Separate white, 2-pin coupling (6) of wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1) out of the plug position K2 of rear fuse and relay module (K40/5)    
10.1 Unscrew brown line (br) with round cable lug from ground shielding CAN and rear SAM (W50/2) IMPORTANT Vehicles up to ident no. A229601 only. 
IMPORTANT The ground shielding CAN and rear signal acquisition and actuation module (W50/2) are located in the immediate vicinity of the rear fuse and relay module (K40/5).
 
11 Unclip dark-blue fuse carrier (7) of wiring harness for trailer hitch socket (1) from rear fuse box (F4) IMPORTANT Two fuse carriers.  
12 Separate black, 6-pin coupling (4) from plug position 1 from rear SAM control unit (N10/8) IMPORTANT The rear SAM control unit Fond (N10/8) is fastened to the underside of the rear fuse and relay module (K40/5).  
13.1 Remove white line (ws) and green line (gn) from black, 6-pin coupling (4) of vehicle's own wiring harness IMPORTANT i Vehicles up to ident no. A229601 only. 
IMPORTANT White line (ws) from plug position 5, green line (gn) from plug position 6.
 
13.2 Remove brown line (br) and brown/red line (br/ rt) from black, 6-pin coupling (4) of vehicle's own wiring harness IMPORTANT Vehicles as of ident no. A229602. 
IMPORTANT Brown line (br) from plug position 5, brown/red line (br/rt) from plug position 6.
 
14 Separate wiring harness for trailer hitch (1) from vehicle's own wiring harness and guide from the rear through the cable duct into the luggage compartment    
15 Separate black, 20-pin coupling (2) and black, 6-pin coupling (3) from trailer recognition control unit (N28/1)    
16 Unscrew brown line with round cable lug from ground (right taillamp in luggage compartment (W7/1))    
17 Remove rubber grommet (5)    
18 Loosen harness for trailer hitch socket (1) and pull out to the rear through the body opening under the right taillamp IMPORTANT Avoid damage due to sharp body edges.  
19 Install in the reverse order    
20 Carry out function check of mechanically swiveling trailer hitch   AR31.19-P-1450M 
21 Carry out function check of the lighting signals at the 13-pin trailer hitch socket (X58)    
REFER TO RETROFITTING AND CONVERSION     AN31.19-P-8100-06MN
