MODIFICATION NOTES

20.3.04 Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified Phased in as of 19.01.04
IMPORTANT The oil filler screws and oil drain screws should always be replaced after being unscrewed.
The new oil filler screws and drain screws as well as the tapped holes must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and provided with a special sealing compound		 BT35.31-P-0015-01A
  The oil drain screw must always be replaced after being unscrewed from the rear axle center assembly. The new oil drain screw as well as the tapped hole must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and the oil drain screw must be provided with a special sealing compound Models 170, 202, 208 AR35.31-P-0520-06A 
    Model 203 AR35.31-P-0520-06I
  The oil filler screw should always be replaced after being unscrewed from the rear axle center assembly.
The new oil filler screw as well as the tapped hole must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and the oil filler screw provided with a special sealing compound		 IMPORTANT Only carry out oil level check at interior temperature.

6 Remove bolts for propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a). IMPORTANTInstallation:  Only tighten the bolts of the propeller shaft intermediate bearing after attaching the flexible coupling to the rear axle differential.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA41.40-P-1001-01A 
7 Remove rear propeller shaft (106) from rear axle differential IMPORTANT Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft.
If the fitted sleeves are jammed: ↓		  
    Loosen fitting sleeves on flexible couplings. AR41.10-P-0050-09DA
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS   Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks.
IMPORTANT Push rear propeller shaft forwards out of the centering on the drive pinion and remove towards the rear.		 WF58.50-P-4110-01A
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Pay attention to existing marking. AR41.10-P-0050-05DA

8.1 Remove cover of fuel pump assembly (140) Vehicles with gasoline engine except model 203  
9 Detach rear axle shafts (37) from the connecting flanges IMPORTANT Move the rear axle shaft into approximately the horizontal position and push together.
Tie rear axle shafts securely to the rear axle carrier.
NOTESInstallation:  Replace self-locking multipoint or hexagon socket bolts and washers.
Lightly oil bolts at thread and bolt head contact surface.

11 Loosen and remove twelve-point collar nut or hexagon collar nut (40) IMPORTANT Do not remove the collar protection when loosening twelve-point or hexagon collar nut.

IMPORTANT To improve guidance when loosening the hexagon collar nut, press a shop-made bush into the commercially available socket wrench bit.		 *WH58.30-Z-1013-06A

Pressing bush for wrench socket NOTESInstallation:  Replace twelve-point or hexagon collar nut and tighten in stages until the previously measured friction torque is obtained.		 WF58.50-P-3531-02A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Observe minimum tightening torque; if necessary if tightening torque is not achieved: ↓ *BA35.31-P-1001-01A 
    IMPORTANT Rear axle center assembly dia. 168 mm, dia. 185 mm, dia. 198 mm: Install new elastic distance sleeve, refer to Disassemble/assemble rear axle center assembly, adjust gear set: ↓

12 Detach joint flange (41). IMPORTANT Use SPECIAL TOOL puller if necessary: ↓

13 Press out radial sealing ring (42) using a suitable tool IMPORTANT 185 mm dia. rear axle center assembly:
When pressing out ensure that no retaining lug (if present) of the loose pressure plate on the tapered roller bearing is broken off. If necessary, replace and remove lug in rear differential assembly.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace radial sealing ring and coat sealing lip with universal hypoid gear oil: ↓
