The exterior lights comprise the following functions:
- Standing lamp actuation
- Parking lamp actuation
- Low beam actuation
- High-beams actuation
- Daytime running lamps actuation
- Automatic driving lights on
- Headlamp range adjustment (HRA)
(for vehicles without code (487) Active Body Control (ABC))
- Cornering illumination (for vehicles with code (619) Cornering illumination)
- Lights on warning
- Front fog lamp actuation
- Rear fog lamp actuation
- Stop lamp actuation
- Turn signal lamp actuation
- Hazard warning flasher actuation
- Backup lamp actuation
- Automatic headlamp on
- Substitute lamp actuation
- Emergency lamp actuation
The master control unit for the exterior lights is the driver-side SAM control unit (N10/10).
It relays the signals for the individual functions over Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) to the relevant control units.
Actuation
Driver-side SAM control unit (N10/10):
- Left front lamp unit (E1)
- Left high beam (E1e1)
- Left standing and parking lamp (E1e3)
- Left turn signal lamp (E1e5)
- Left high beam solenoid (E1l1)

- Right front lamp unit (E2):
- Xenon headlamp ignition module (E2n2)
- Right low beam (E2e2)
- Left front fog lamp (E5/1)

The passenger-side SAM control unit (N10/11) actuates the following components:
- Right front lamp unit (E2)
- Right high beam (E2e1)
- Right standing and parking lamp (E2e3)
- Right turn signal lamp (E2e5)
- Right high beam solenoid (E2l1) (for code (614) Bi-xenon headlamp unit)
- Left front lamp unit (E1):
- Xenon headlamp ignition module (E1n2)
- Left low beam (E1e2)
- Right fog lamp (E5/2)
- Right front side-marker lamp
The rear SAM control unit (N10/8) actuates the following components:
- Left taillamp (E3)
- Right taillamp (E4)
- left license plate lamp (E19/1)
- Right license plate lamp (E19/2)
- center high-mounted stop lamp (E21)
The left door control unit (N69/1) actuates the following component:
- Left outside rearview mirror turn signal lamp (E6/5)
The right door control unit (N69/2) actuates the following component:
- Right outside rearview mirror turn signal lamp (E6/6)
