Extended vehicle network 

The further development of driver information systems as well as the spread of driver-supporting systems (e.g. backup camera, ambient sensor technology), are reflected in the requirements on data bus systems.

A data bus is a data collection line, the data of which can be used by all the control units connected.

Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) in automotive engineering means that data exchange takes place between all control units in a vehicle.

Function 

The majority of control units are networked by means of data bus lines. Control commands or messages are coded and sent to the data bus message or address orientated, with each control unit having different priorities, i.e. access rights. These coded commands or messages can only be received by control units with authorized access.

The corresponding actuators are then actuated by these control units. In certain cases, various received messages are also combined in a control unit to form a new message. The new message is then also available for other control units on the data bus system.

Basically 3 data bus systems are involved in the networking:

The operational fields differentiate as follows:

IMPORTANT In respect of the interference immunity, e.g. against electromagnetic effects or radiation and the high data transfer rate, higher requirements are placed on the engine compartment CAN-C.

Data transfer between the bus systems 

The following control units form the interface between the bus systems:

The EIS control unit (N73) is also the interface between the control units on the CAN-B and the line to the data link connector (X11/4) for STAR DIAGNOSIS.

Steering column module (N80) and instrument cluster (A1) 

Although the instrument cluster (A1) and the steering column module (N80) are connected both to the CAN-B as well as to CAN-C and exchange data with both systems, they do not act as an interface (gateway) between the two bus systems!

IMPORTANT The internationally standardized network management "OSEK" (open systems and their interfaces for electronics in vehicles) is used for all the control units on the CAN-B.

D2B 

The D2B (digital data bus) is an optical  bus system. Data is carried to the network's control units via fiber optic cables. Among the control units linked to the D2B are: 

Data transfer between various bus systems 

EIS control unit 

Data are transferred between the engine compartment CAN  and the interior CAN  via the EIS control unit  (N73) acting as the interface (gateway).

The EIS control unit (N73) also acts as the interface between the control units on the interior CAN and the cable to the datalink connector for the STAR Diagnosis tool.

Steering column module 

IMPORTANT As of 01.07.02 the steering column module (N80) is also connected to CAN B and CAN-C, however, does not act as an interface (gateway) between the two bus systems.

All the button operations on the multifunction steering wheel and switch operations on the steering column module (N80) are read in by this and placed on CAN B. The driving direction signals are recognized by the steering angle sensor and are placed on CAN C via the steering column module (N80, these signals are available to the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and the air suspension and adaptive cruise control (ART)

Instrument cluster 

IMPORTANT Although the instrument cluster  (A1) is connected both to the interior CAN as well as to the engine compartment CAN and exchanges data with both systems, it does not act as an interface (gateway) between the two bus systems!
