MODIFICATION NOTES

20.3.04 Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified Phased in as of 19.01.04 BT35.31-P-0015-01A
    IMPORTANT The oil filler screws and oil drain screws should always be replaced after being unscrewed.
The new oil filler screws and drain screws as well as the tapped holes must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and provided with a special sealing compound
 
  The oil filler screw should always be replaced after being unscrewed from the rear axle center assembly. The new oil filler screw as well as the tapped hole must be cleaned with a special cleaning spray and the oil filler screw provided with a special sealing compound IMPORTANT Only carry out oil level check at interior temperature. AR35.31-P-0520-03I
20.3.04 The vehicle must have a chassis alignment check after the rear axle is installed Step 22  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surface of all aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
1 Remove rear wheels.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
2 Remove exhaust system as of flange connection   AR49.10-P-7000AA
3 Unhook brake cables (1) from automatic slack adjuster (2) of parking brake See: ↓  
    Remove rear brake cable AR42.20-P-0525I
4 Unscrew bolts of propeller shaft intermediate bearing (3) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA41.40-P-1001-01A 
5 Detach rear propeller shaft assembly (4) from rear axle center assembly. IMPORTANT Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft.  
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Attach the rear propeller shaft to the rear axle differential. AR41.10-P-0050-04I
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA41.10-P-1002-01A 
6 Slacken flexible coupling fitted sleeves on flange. IMPORTANT Put propeller shaft to one side and tie up. AR41.10-P-0050-09I
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks.   WF58.50-P-4110-01A
7 Disconnect right rear brake pad contact sensor connector (S10/4x1)    
8 Detach cover for fuel pump assembly (5)    
9 Disconnect rpm sensor connector on the left (L6/3x1) and right (L6/4x1)    
10 Detach spring control arm cover (6) IMPORTANT To do this, pull pin out of expansion rivet and remove expansion rivet from spring control arm and spring control arm cover (6).  
11 Detach suspension strut (7) from spring control arm TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA32.25-P-1005-04B 
12 Detach level sensor control rod (8) from both spring control arms TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA82.10-P-1006-02A 
DANGER Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  caused by brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes. Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
13 Detach brake lines from brake hose (9) and seal openings IMPORTANT When loosening or tightening the brake line on the brake hose (9), take care not to twist the bracket. Counterhold open wrench on two flats of brake hose (9) using an open-end wrench.
NOTES Seal line connections immediately with SPECIAL TOOL plugs. The brake fluid reservoir must not run completely empty.

    NOTESInstallation:  The brake hoses (9) must not be twisted after being tightened (risk of cracking).

15 Use assembly attachment, pit hoist or floor jack beneath rear axle center assembly to support rear axle (10). SPECIAL TOOL Assembly attachment Fig 5
16 Unscrew front rear axle suspension bolts (11c) and rear axle suspension bolts (11d) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Recut the thread on the frame floor using the tap.  
    IMPORTANTInstallation:  Tighten bolts as per tightening angle. AR35.10-P-0010-08I 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Rear axle suspension bolt, front (11c) *BA35.10-P-1001-01A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Rear axle suspension bolt, rear (11d) *BA35.10-P-1002-01A 
17 Carefully lower the rear axle (10). IMPORTANT In the process do not trap any brake cables (1) and lines.  
18 Check rear axle (10) for damage and if necessary replace parts.    
19 Install in the reverse order    
20 Check oil level in rear axle differential and correct if necessary IMPORTANT Mixing of old universal hypoid gear oil and the new FE hypoid gear oil should be avoided due to the better fuel economy. AR35.31-P-0520-03I
    FLUID SPECIFICATION Filling capacity of rear axle differential *BF35.31-P-1001-01M 
    Cleaning spray, Loctite 7063 (150ml) *BR00.45-Z-1046-04A 
    Sealant, Omnifit 100H (50 g) *BR00.45-Z-1061-01A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Oil filler screw for rear axle differential *BA35.31-P-1002-02A 
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Oil filler/drain screw on rear axle differential modified Phased in as of 19.01.04 BT35.31-P-0015-01A
21 Bleed brake system   AR42.10-P-0010I
22 Perform a wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200I
23 Check headlamp adjustment and correct if necessary
