MODIFICATION NOTES

28.2.07 Self-locking nut, steering joint to rack-and-pinion steering   *BA46.10-P-1002-01E 
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Evaluating steering rack when repairing accident vehicles   AH46.20-P-9409-01A
1 Move out or push out adjustable steering column completely IMPORTANT Needed for separating the steering coupling (25).  
2.1 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors) code 275
NOTES Otherwise the driver seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver door is opened/closed. The upper frame may be damaged when the holding device is installed.
IMPORTANT It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display, see vehicle owner's manual.
 
3 Extract fluid out of the power steering pump's fluid reservoir SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Figure
4 Remove front wheels    
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
5 Detach front and rear lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105P
6 Pry off tie rod ball joints (10a) at right and left of steering knuckle   AR46.40-P-0200-02PW

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.40-P-1001-01E 
7 Remove exhaust shielding plate over the right rubber boot on the retaining plate of the rack-and-pinion steering (23)    
8 Detach exhaust shielding plate of steering coupling (23k) on control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (23) IMPORTANT Three bolts.  
9 Remove lower bolt (25b) from steering coupling (25) IMPORTANT To do so rotate steering coupling (25) into corresponding position.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.10-P-1002-01E 
10 Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device NOTES On a disengaged steering coupling (25) the steering wheel should not be turned because the spiral contact coil will be destroyed.

11 Pull steering coupling (25) carefully out of the control valve of the rack-and-pinion steering (23) (predetermined fracture point on control valve) NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, strong lever action) because the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral dynamic force and the lower steering shaft may be damaged.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Refer to: ↓
 
    Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position and mount steering coupling AR46.20-P-0600-01P 
12 Remove retaining plate of oil lines (23s) from rack-and-pinion steering (23) and pull out oil lines IMPORTANT Seal off line connections with plugs.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  replace O-rings.

13 Remove support bracket (1g) on rack-and-pinion steering (23) IMPORTANT To do so undo bolts (23g).

14 Prop up rack-and-pinion steering (23)    
15 Remove support bracket (1g) from front axle carrier To do so unscrew bolts (23a).  
    IMPORTANT *BA46.20-P-1004-01F 
16 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (23)    
17 Check rubber mounts (21) of rack-and-pinion steering fixing for damage and replace, if necessary   AR46.20-P-0600-02I 
    Lubricant paste *BR00.45-Z-1002-06A 
18 Check protective cap on input shaft of rack-and- pinion steering (23) for damage IMPORTANT Replace if necessary. See: ↓  
    Remove/install protective cap for input shaft on steering gear AR46.20-P-0004P 
19 Install in the reverse order    
20 Fill power steering pump Except model 203.2 with rear axle level control system code 480 AR46.30-P-0010P 
    Model 203.281/284 with level control on rear axle code 480
Model 203.287/292 with level control on rear axle code 480

21 Check steering for function and leaks    
22.1 Check front axle toe and adjust if necessary IMPORTANT When installing new parts. see: ↓  
    Perform a wheel alignment check AR40.20-P-0200P
