The navigation route guidance (based on CD data basis) is primarily supported by voice output :

Only " "; as of 01.06.01 specification of "magnetic direction " (north, south, east and west ). For streets designated with names (e.g. in cities), the magnetic direction is not indicated.

The voice data is originally stored on the navigation CD-ROM as individual word segments. This record is automatically transmitted and stored by the CD-ROM in the navigation processor.

The navigation processor connects the word segments to complete instructions or information and generates corresponding audio signals ( AF ). If required the generated AF signals are relayed internally to the COMAND-audio signal processing, amplified and output via the vehicle loudspeakers.

If the vehicle is equipped with a sound system (code 810) , the voice signals are transferred by the COMAND audio signal processing system to the sound system amplifier (N40/3) , where they are amplified and output on the vehicle loudspeakers.

Several driving recommendations coming in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

Manual voice loading from CD ROM

COMAND is equipped with various languages. They can be selected with the menu " System settings ". The data for the voice output is transmitted from the CD-ROM to the navigation processor (A40/n2) and stored in non-volatile memory.

Language loading requires a few seconds and modifies both the voice output and the menu texts on the display . If the power supply is interrupted the language is reloaded automatically.

While a language is loaded from the CD-ROM avoid heavy vibration (e.g. with poor road conditions). Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Superimposing voice output and audio source

If an audio source (e.g. CD, radio) is simultaneously active in addition to the voice output, both signal sources are superimposed.

Volume of voice output

The voice output volume can be changed during voice output . A definable interval is maintained automatically between the volume of the current audio source and the volume of the voice output (interval can be changed in "Settings" menu).

The volume is reduced during voice output and the volume interval set in relation to the audio signal is too low. COMAND then reduces the audio signal level until the specified volume difference is reached again. After voice output has taken place, the volume of the audio signal is increased to match that of the voice output.

Moreover, the voice output volume cannot be set below a certain minimum level .

Voice output mute circuit

The navigation voice output can be switched to mute with the mute button (button with loudspeaker symbol crossed out) during voice output.

Muting applies only for the current voice output.

When navigation voice output and an audio source (e.g. CD, radio) are heard simultaneously, the navigation voice output is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed for the first time and the complete playback is switched to mute when the mute button is pressed a second time .
