Route calculation function - GF82.61-P-3011G

MODEL 208, 210 with CODE (352a) COMAND operating and display system except CODE (498) Japanese version

After inputting the destination on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)  , the route is calculated and constantly updated by the navigation processor  . This can only be calculated within the digitalized map areas.

The calculated route is the prerequisite of the destination guidance system  .

Route calculation

With the aid of the CD-ROM map data, the input destination and the current position, the navigation processor  calculates the route. It takes roads and attributes, such as one-way roads, turning prohibitions, road classes... (insofar as these are available), which are read from the CD-ROM map, into consideration during calculation. In this case, the operator is able to specify the manner in which the route is to be calculated:

On selection of the "Dynamic route"  ,

a traffic data memory  integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)  is used to store those traffic messages received via the radio (FM/RDS or D-network); these are then automatically  taken into consideration on calculation of the route. The route is then calculated with the optimum time, in a manner similar to the "Fastest route" option. Notification that the route has been recalculated taking traffic messages into consideration, is provided. The "Dynamic route" function is only currently available for highways (Status: 3/99).

Under "Own selection  ", the following stretches can be blocked from the route calculation:

Following the calculation of the route, the navigation processor  generates a list of roads and junctions to be driven along.

This route list is used for destination guidance.

It may also be displayed by calling up the "Information" menu.

Route updating

If the driver deviates from the calculated route, a new route list is calculated by the navigation processor  . In this case, the current position and the direction of travel are taken into consideration, and the new route is optimized accordingly. The message "New Route  " appears in the display ("NEW RTE" appears in the instrument cluster (A1)  ).

Journeys outside of the digitalized map area

If the vehicle leaves the digitalized CD-ROM map area (e. g. driving in a multi-level car park), no  route can be calculated or updated. "OFF ROAD" appears on the display. On leaving the limits of the map (e. g. foreign countries) "NO MAP" appears.

Destinations which lie outside of the digitalized map area cannot be taken into consideration on calculation of the route.

Circumventing traffic jams via the "Detour" function

Following a traffic jam message via a traffic information radio channel, a route which circumvents the traffic jam can be calculated before the relevant stretch has been reached. In order to achieve this, the "Detour" button must be pressed, and either:

In contrast to "Dynamic destination guidance", the "Detour" function is available both for Federal and country roads and in urban areas.
