Removing and installing steering gear - AR46.20-P-0500A: Notes

10.9.03 Reference to adjusting toe on front axle replaced by reference to chassis alignment check Step 30  
REMOVING Removing    
DANGER Risk of fatal injury  if the vehicle slips or topples off the lifting platform Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize the hydraulic system completely before starting any work on the system. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
DANGER Risk of injury with trapped or crushed  fingers when removing and installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/tailgate and sliding roof. When moving components ensure that no body parts or limbs are in the area of movement. AS00.00-Z-0011-01A

1 Fully extend steering column    
2 Open engine hood    
3 Suction off oil from the power steering pump SPECIAL TOOL Fig 2
4 Separate electrical connector (1) of SPS valve (2) at left side of front end and expose cable harness to steering gear   AR46.50-P-0500-01A 
5 Raise vehicle    
6 Detach tie rod (10) from steering gear pitman arm   AR46.40-P-0200B 
7 Detach drag link (11) from steering gear pitman arm   AR46.40-P-0100B 
8.1 Remove exhaust connecting pipe Model 140.04/05/063/07  
9.1 Remove heat shield (23k) Model 140.04/05/063/07  
10 Detach return line (30f) and high-pressure expansion hose (30i) IMPORTANT Seal off line connections with plugs.
SPECIAL TOOL Set of plugs

11 Remove key and engage steering lock IMPORTANT The steering wheel must not be turned otherwise the clock spring contact (3) will be irreparably damaged.  
12 Detach steering shaft (80a) from steering coupling (25)    
13 Unscrew stretch bolts (23a) and remove steering gear (23)    
IMPORTANT Assessing condition of steering gear when repairing accident vehicles   AH46.20-P-9409-01A 
INSTALLING Installing     
14 Turn steering gear to center position   AR46.20-P-0500-01A 
15 Insert steering gear and fasten to front axle carrier (1x) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace stretch bolts (23a).  
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Surface protection on bolted connection between steering gear and front axle carrier modified Model 140 as of 1.6.97 BT46.20-P-0002-01A 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1004-01A 
16 Push steering shaft (80a) into steering coupling (25) as far as the stop and install bolt (25a) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace bolt (25a).

21 Attach drag link (11) to steering gear pitman arm IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace nut (10h). AR46.40-P-0100B 
22 Attach tie rod to steering gear pitman arm IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace nut (11e). AR46.40-P-0200B 
23 Route cable harness from steering gear over front axle carrier    
24 Lower vehicle    
25 Plug electrical connector (1) into SPS valve (2)   AR46.50-P-0500-01A 
26 Fill and bleed power steering pump   AR46.30-P-0010A 
27 Check steering gear for function and leaks    
28 Read out fault memory and erase faults in speed-sensitive power steering if necessary Up to 5/94  in SPS control unit Diagnosis Manual Chassis Vol. 2 □ 7.1
As of 6/94  in ASR or ETS control unit Diagnosis Manual Chassis Vol. 3 Traction Systems (ASR, ETS, ESP and SPS).
 
29 Check ball point position   AR40.20-P-0320A
30 Check toe on front axle and adjust if necessary See: ↓
