Replace bottom radial shaft sealing ring on control head - AR46.20-P-0003AB

MODEL 210 with CODE (979) Special protection version with CODE (Z04) Light armoring with CODE (Z06) B6 armoring

REMOVING Remove     
DANGER Risk of death.  Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1 Remove rack-and-pinion steering   AR46.20-P-0600A 
2 Mount the rack-and-pinion steering in the fixture for locating the steering housing NOTESWarning! 
For the following work attention should be paid to extreme cleanliness in the workplace while carrying out the repair!
Only the specified tool may be used! Before starting the repair, remove loose contamination on the steering gear without using cleaning agent, otherwise the steering may become damaged.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Steering gear housing support Figure
3 Remove clamps on the inside of both bellows    
4 Press outer clamps together IMPORTANT Move bellows towards the tie rod end.  
5 Detach inner tie rod with axial joint NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, severe leverage) as otherwise the tie rod with axial joint will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Detach the left and right side. Secure the steering rack to prevent it from twisting, counterhold with open wrench.

ASSEMBLING Dismantling     
6 Unscrew screws (1)    
7 Unscrew screw (2)    
8 Remove the pipelines (3)    
9 Loosen adjusting screw (4) approx. 2 revolutions IMPORTANT Mark the position before loosening the adjusting screw (4).  
10 Mount the sleeve on the control head side of the steering rack IMPORTANT The assembled sleeve does not always correspond with center position of the steering rack.

11 Remove covering cap (5)    
12 Unscrew bolts (6)    
13 Screw in studs NOTES (7) Stud bolts must be screwed in for removing the control head, otherwise radial shaft sealing ring and teeth faces can be damaged. (8)
IMPORTANT Studs can be shop-made (M8x50).
 
14 Rotate input shaft counterclockwise IMPORTANT Until the control head (7) releases from the steer jacket (9).

15 Remove control head (7)    
16 Remove spring washer (10)    
17 Unscrew studs    
18 Remove oil which has run in from the control head (7) from the rack-and-pinion steering IMPORTANT Turn rack-and-pinion steering with opening facing downwards and allow oil to drain out. In order to rule out contamination, do not use any cleaning agent, shop towels or cleaning cloths.  
19 Remove rotary shaft seal (8) NOTES Do not position puller on threads or too far inward to prevent damage to threads and/or O-ring seat.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Pay attention to correct installation position of radial shaft sealing ring (8).

ASSEMBLING Assembling     
20 Grease outer surface of radial shaft sealing ring (8) IMPORTANT Apply grease with fingers, do not use other aid  
21 Drive in radial shaft sealing ring (8) NOTES Pay attention to correct seating of the drift and guide sleeve, otherwise the radial shaft sealing ring (8) will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Pay attention to the correct installation position of the radial shaft sealing ring (8).

22 Grease inner lip of radial shaft sealing ring (8) IMPORTANT Apply grease with fingers. Do not use any other aids.  
23 Insert spring washer (10) IMPORTANT Insert disk spring (10) with the curvature towards the steer jacket (9).  
24 Screw in studs NOTES The studs must be screwed in to install the control head (7) in order to avoid damaging the radial shaft sealing ring (8) and tooth flanks.  
25 Mount sleeve on the steering rack on the side facing away from the control head IMPORTANT The installed sleeve does not always immediately correspond the rack center position.  
26 Push the control head (7) in as far as possible IMPORTANT Replace O-ring.  
27 Rotate input shaft clockwise NOTES Turn carefully! Teeth faces can be damaged.
IMPORTANT Rotate clockwise until the input shaft bearing is located in the guide in the steering housing (9).

28 Unscrew studs    
29 Screw in screws (6) IMPORTANT Screw in several steps in order to prevent tilting over.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1009-01A 
30 Move steering rack into center position IMPORTANT Detach sleeve from the steering rack. Find the center position using a depth gauge. Bring both sides of the end of the steering rack to the same dimension relative to the stop ring (11) in the steering housing (9).  
31 Grease the gap between the input shaft and control head (7) (arrow) IMPORTANT Apply grease with fingers. Do not use any other aids.  
32 Push on cap (5) IMPORTANT The marking on the cap (5) must match the marking on the control head (7) (arrow).  
33 Install pipelines (3) IMPORTANT Replace all O-rings.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.20-P-1011-01A 
34 Set play between thrust piece and steering rack   AR46.20-P-0601A 
35 Check rack for easy motion by turning manually.    
INSTALLING Install     
36 Mount inner tie rod with axial joint NOTES Do not use force (hammer blows, severe leverage) as otherwise the tie rod with axial joint will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Mount the left and right side. Secure the rack to prevent it from twisting, counterhold with open wrench.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.40-P-1003-01A 
37 Compress clamps on the outside IMPORTANT Move bellows towards steering housing (9).  
38 Install inner clamps of the two bellows IMPORTANT Replace clamps.  
39 Detach rack-and-pinion steering from the fixture for locating the steering housing

40 Install rack-and-pinion steering   AR46.20-P-0600A 
41 Measure vehicle electronically, adjust toe of front and rear axle   AR40.20-P-0200FB
DANGER Risk of accident  as vehicle may start off by itself with the engine running. Risk of injury  as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in contusions and burns Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

42 Check rack-and-pinion steering for proper function. IMPORTANT Rotate steering wheel from lock to lock several times. Check oil level in steering. Check leaktightness of steering. Check function of steering during low-speed and highspeed cornering.
