Modification notes

1.3.95 Technical modification: Bolts for attaching camshaft housing discontinued
The camshaft housing must be bolted onto the cylinder head when performing repairs.
Refer to Step 8
REMOVING Removing
1 Remove cylinder head cover   AR01.20-P-5014HA
2 Position piston of cylinder 1 to ignition TDC NOTES Crank engine; do not rotate engine on Bolt for camshaft gear, do not rotate engine backwards.
IMPORTANT Marking of camshaft and camshaft bearing cap (arrows) must be aligned.

3 Lock inlet camshaft (6) Insert retaining pin (1) through the 1st. camshaft bearing cap into the hole of the intake camshaft gear (2).
    SPECIAL TOOL Figure
4 Install retaining lock (7) for crankshaft / starter ring gear   AR03.30-P-5000HA
5 Mark camshaft gear (5) to timing chain IMPORTANT For all work in which the crankshaft should not be rotated, join up the camshaft gear (5) and timing chain by using tie wraps.
6 Remove chain tensioner (10)   AR05.10-P-7800HA
7 Disconnect and remove camshaft gear (5) from exhaust camshaft (7) SPECIAL TOOL
Note locating pin (3) (arrow).
Take off camshaft sprocket (5) with the timing chain on.

11 Remove dust shield collar (12)
INSTALLING Installing
12 Install dust shield collar (12) Install new seals.
The tab on the dust shield's collar (arrow) must line up with the guide notch in the camshaft housing.

13 Install intake and exhaust camshafts (6, 7) NOTES The camshafts are very sensitive to fracturing. Ensure they are installed free of stress.
IMPORTANTInstallation  : Lubricate flat tappets and camshaft gear bearing positions, check flat tappets for freedom of motion. Align inlet and exhaust camshafts to axial bearing (arrows). Mount camshafts so that the two markings (13) in the camshaft gears are opposite each other and the markings on the camshaft and camshaft bearing cap line up (arrows).

    Note camshaft allocation!
The camshaft code numbers are visible in each case on the thrust collar of the axial bearing.
