Dismantling and assembling rigid jacket tube - AR46.10-P-0500B

MODEL 210 up to 30.11.98

DISASSEMBLING Dismantling     
1 Remove jacket tube   AR46.10-P-0400B 
2 Detach bolt (80c) and remove lower steering shaft (80a) INSPECT Check the lateral runout of the lower steering shaft (80a) (visual inspection).  
3 Remove disk spring (70e) and support ring (70d) IMPORTANT On vehicles up to 09/95 (steel joint fork) a spacer is inserted between the lower steering shaft and disk spring. This is not used as of 10/95 (light-alloy joint fork).  
4 Push out steering shaft (70g) slightly and remove locking rings (70h, 70c) and support ring (70b)    
5 Press ball bearing (70a) out of the jacket tube using the steering shaft (70g)    
ASSEMBLING Assembling     
6 Press new ball bearing (70a) into the jacket tube from above using a suitable tube (072)    
7 Push in steering shaft (70g) and press in the second ball bearing from underneath    
8 Push the support ring (70d) and locking ring (70c) onto the steering shaft together IMPORTANT Ensure that the locking ring is seated correctly in the steering shaft groove.  
9 Fit locking ring (70h)    
10 Push on support ring (70d) and disk spring (70e)    
11 Mount lower steering shaft (80a) on upper steering shaft IMPORTANT The disk spring must be preloaded fully otherwise play is detectable at the steering wheel
Lower steering shaft (80a) with light-alloy sliding tube (4-cylinder engines) 
The following should be observed when the light-alloy steering shaft is separated:
  • The position of the inner slide relative to the a outer slide is determined by a slightly offset tooth and therefore force should not be used during assembly.
  • It must be possible for the inner slide to a move easily in the longitudinal direction, refer to: ↓

12 Tighten bolt (80c) NOTESInstallation:  Replace nut (80h)
