Checking and replacing bellows - AR46.40-P-0400A

Modification notes

10.9.03 Reference to adjusting toe on front axle replaced by reference to chassis alignment check Step 10  
INSPECT Checking     
DANGER Risk of fatal  injury if the vehicle slips or topples off the lifting platform Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1.1 Remove engine compartment paneling Vehicles with gasoline engines. AR61.20-P-1105AB
1.2 Remove bottom sections of noise encapsulation Vehicles with diesel engines. AR94.30-P-5300AB
2 Check bellows on right and left tie rods (1g) IMPORTANT Perfect sealing of the bellows is absolutely vital for correct functioning of the rack-and-pinion steering, so perform the visual inspection as follows:
  • Stretch bellows by turning the steering to a left and right lock, and check for damage (cracks, chafing etc.), and replace if necessary.
 
    NOTES Never check bellows by pressing in or around the beads, as this leaves behind damage on the bellows, resulting in leaks in the long term.  
REMOVINGINSTALLING Removing, installing     
3 Slacken lock nut (10f) and unscrew tie rod (10). Unscrew clamping nut IMPORTANTInstallation:  Counter tie rod.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA40.20-P-1007-01A 
4 Detach inner clamp (1h) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Fit new clamp and, using a commercially available gripper, close clamping lug completely.  
5 Detach outer clamp (1i) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Use new clamp.  
6 Remove bellows and pull off over the tie rod    
7 Remove O-ring from steering gear housing and replace    
8 Check steering rack and axial joint of inner tie rod for corrosion and play IMPORTANT If the steering rack is already corroded and the steering is leaking as a result, the rack and- pinion steering must be replaced complete:
 
    Removing rack-and-pinion steering AR46.20-P-0600A 
    IMPORTANT If the axial joint is misaligned, replace inner tie rod: ↓  
    Removing inner tie rod with axial joint AR46.40-P-0201A 
9 Install in the reverse order    
10 Check toe on front axle and adjust if necessary See: ↓  
    Performing chassis alignment check AR40.20-P-0200A
