Checking camshaft timing - RA05001202150X(05-2150)

Preceding work:

Cylinder head covers removed (01-0500) .

Spark plugs removed (15-1031) .

Camshaft code numbers check (step 1).
Checking timing of intake camshafts 
Intake cams at cylinders 1 or 7 position so that only the base circles are resting against the bucket tappets (5) (step 2).
Dial gauge holder (2) 363 589 02 21 00 with threaded sleeve (4) install at cylinder 1 or 7 (step 3).
Dial gauge (1) fit into dial gauge holder (2) with tracer pin (3) on the inside of the camshaft to be checked (steps 4 to 6).
Preload of 3 mm and angle of approx. 90° of tracer pin (3) on bucket tappet (5) set (step 4).
Crankshaft rotate with wrench socket 001 589 65 09 00 in direction of rotation of engine.
At valve lift of 2 mm the reading at the vibration damper must agree with the figure in the table "intake valve opens after TDC" (step 7).
Checking exhaust camshaft timing 
Intake cams at cylinders 1 or 7 position so that only the base circles are resting against the bucket tappets (5) (step 8).
Dial gauge holder (2) 363 589 02 21 00 with threaded sleeve (4) install at cylinder 1 or 7 (step 9).
Dial gauge (1) fit into dial gauge holder (2) with tracer pin (3) on the inside of the camshaft to be checked (steps 10 to 12).
Preload of 3 mm and angle of approx. 90° of tracer pin (3) on bucket tappet (5) set (step 10).
Crankshaft rotate with wrench socket 001 589 65 09 00 in direction of rotation of engine.
At valve lift of 2 mm the reading at the vibration damper must agree with the figure in the table "exhaust valve opens before BDC" (step 13).

1) Permissible deviation: ± 2.0° CKA. Perform check only with rising cam (in direction of rotation of engine).
(1) Camshaft code number inscribed on front of 3rd camshaft bearing journal or stamped with paint from the rear on camshaft flange.
(2) Camshaft adjuster in "retarded" position.
(3) Noise-optimized, engine 120.980 12 as of engine end no. 010 823, engine 120.981 as of start of series production.

Shop-made tool 

Threaded sleeve (M8 to M6 reduction) for attaching dial gauge holder 363 589 02 21 00 to sealing surface of cylinder head cover.

NOTE: Up to February 1992 the marking numbers are stamped on the vibration damper (8) only within the range from 45° before TDC up to 20° after TDC in 5° graduation for cylinders 1 and 6. As of February 1992 the marking numbers are stamped on the vibration damper (8) from 0° to 360° in graduations of 5°.

The arc size for 5 °CKA at the vibration damper is 9.3 mm.

When performing removal and installation work, it is sufficient if the basic setting of the camshafts is checked (see 05-2230).

Piston in TDC or BDC position at °crank angle reading on vibration damper.

  1. Check camshaft code numbers. The camshaft code numbers are applied in each case to the 3rd camshaft bearing journal (arrows) (behind the camshaft bearing caps) or stamped with paint on the camshaft flanges (arrows).

    Checking timing of intake camshafts 

  2. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench 001 589 65 09 00 until the tips of the intake cams to be checked are pointing up (arrows) and only the base circles are still resting on the bucket tappets.

  3. Fit on dial gauge holder (2) 363 589 02 21 00 with threaded sleeve (4) at the sealing surface of the cylinder head cover for the camshaft to be checked at cylinder 1 or 7.

  4. Clamp dial gauge (1) 001 589 53 21 00 with tracer pin (3) (80 mm) in the dial gauge holder (2) so that the tracer pin (3) is resting vertically on the bucket tappet (arrow) with a preload of 3 mm (small pointer of dial gauge).
  5. Check ease of movement of tracer pin (3).
  6. Rotate dial gauge scale until the large pointer of the gauge (1) is at "0".

  7. Rotate crankshaft with wrench socket 001 589 65 09 00 in direction of rotation of engine until the dial gauge (1) indicates a valve lift  of 2 mm.

    In this position the figure on the vibration damper must agree with the figure " intake valve opens after TDC"  .

    NOTE: 1st cylinder in TDC at 0 °CKA

    7th cylinder in TDC at 60 °CKA

    Checking timing of exhaust camshafts 

  8. Crank camshaft with socket wrench 001 589 65 09 00 in direction of rotation of engine until the tips of the exhaust cams to be checked are facing up (arrows) and only the base circles are still resting on the bucket tappets.

  9. Fit on dial gauge holder (2) 363 589 02 21 00 with threaded sleeve (4) at the sealing surface of the cylinder head cover for the camshaft to be checked at cylinder 1 or 7.

  10. Clamp dial gauge (1) 001 589 53 21 00 with tracer pin (3) (80 mm) in the dial gauge holder (2) so that the tracer pin (3) is resting vertically on the bucket tappet (arrow) with a preload of 3 mm (small pointer of dial gauge).
  11. Check ease of movement of tracer pin (3).
  12. Turn dial gauge scale until the large pointer of the gauge (1) is at "0".
  13. Rotate crankshaft with wrench socket 001 589 65 09 00 in direction of rotation of engine until the dial gauge (1) indicates a valve lift  of 2 mm at cylinder 1 or 7.

    In this position, the figure on the vibration damper must agree with the figure " exhaust valve opens before BDC"  .

    NOTE: 1st cylinder in BDC at 180 °CKA

    7th cylinder in BDC at 240 °CKA
