Function of contact spiral between steering column tube and steering wheel - RA4600FBL0617X(46-0617)
Contact spiral between jacket tube and steering wheel
The contact spiral establishes electrical continuity between the jacket tube and steering wheel. It replaces the previously fitted horn and airbag wiper contacts in the jacket tube and steering wheel.
Function
The housing sections (32f and 32g) can rotate relative to each other. The lower section of the housing (32g) is screwed to the steering column tube with fixing screws (32h), these fixing screws being used as an anti-twist device when the contact spiral is removed. The upper section of the housing (32f) is also turned by the steering wheel.
Design
The contact spiral comprises:
- lower section of the housing (32g),
- upper section of the housing (32f),
- 4-wire ribbon cable (32e), coiled up in a spiral approximately 3.5 m in length
- Fixing screws (32h)
The ribbon cable (32e) is uncoiled on right lock and coiled up on left lock by turning the steering wheel.
The maximum rotation range starting from the center position of the steering wheel: approx. 2 steering wheel rotations.
The symbols on the contact spiral provide the following assembly information.
The following attachment parts have been modified:
- Jacket tube with attachment parts (extended by 7 mm) and a second circlip
- Steering wheel
- Cable harness
- Additional horn relay
- Turn signal indicator switch and Tempomat lever
- Airbag sensor (refer to SEATS, BUNKS, RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - 140 CHASSIS )
- Steering angle sensor
Notes on assembly work
- If the connection between the steering gear and steering shaft is separated, the steering wheel must not be turned otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed
.
Therefore always allow the steering wheel lock to engage .
- For all work on the steering wheel, jacket tube and steering gear keep the front wheels in the straightahead position
- Observe safety regulations for AIRBAG (REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF AIRBAG UNIT ON STEERING WHEEL )
- Before removing the steering wheel, disconnect the flat-pin connector for the signal horn (38b and 38c) and push through the impact absorber in the steering wheel.
Retrofitting in vehicles with wiper contacts is not possible.
The steering angle sensor for ADS is clipped into the back of the contact spiral. At the same time it has been converted from magnetic to optical operation.
