Removing and Installing Catalytic Converter or Front Exhaust System - RA49001190170X(49-0170)

Preceding work:
Removing and installing exhaust system downstream of flanged joint (49-0045)
| Oxygen sensor plug connection (G3/2x1) | detach, attach.
NOTE:

| Heat shield (2c) | pull off, fit on, pay attention to installation position. |
| Oxygen sensor (G3/2) | unscrew, screw in.
NOTE:
Coat thread with hot lubricating paste, part no. 000 989 76 51.

| Thermocouple (B16/6) of catalytic converter temperature warning system | remove, install (see notes, step 2). |
| All models | |
| Bolts (4) at exhaust manifold | unscrew, screw in.
NOTE:
Replace damaged rivet nuts (1) and install in exhaust manifolds with caulking bolt 103 589 01 39 00. Tightening torque 30 Nm as reference value.

| Nuts (6a) at support (30) | unscrew, screw on, replace. Tightening torque 20 Nm as reference value. |
| Threaded plate (6) | check suitability for re-use, replace if necessary. |
| Bolted joint (3, 8) | slacken, tighten. Replace self-locking nuts (3). Tightening torque 20 Nm as reference value. |
| Front left exhaust pipe (2) | take off, fit on. |
| Centered seal (5) | check suitability for re-use, replace if necessary, pay attention to correct installation. |
| Front right exhaust pipe (2a) | take off, fit on (only on vehicles without catalytic converter). Check suitability of flange (5a) and graphite seal (5b) for re-use, replace if necessary, pay attention to correct installation. |
| Catalytic converter or front exhaust system (2d, 2b) | take off, fit on (see notes, step 1). |
| Locking bolt (16) | unscrew, screw in, replace. Tightening torque 25 Nm as reference value. |
| Bracket (15) and rubber ring (17) | check suitability for re-use, replace if necessary. |
| Leaktightness of all connection points | check with engine running. |
Special tool
NOTE:
- Disposing of catalytic converters
Catalytic converters must not be disposed of as scrap. The catalytic converter contains valuable precious metal which can be recycled in the production process.

- Catalytic temperature warning system, only
The purpose of the warning system is to signal an impermissibly high rise in temperature in the catalytic converter by means of an indicator lamp in the instrument cluster .
