Remove/install timing case cover - AR01.40-P-8000HX

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
1 Remove lower engine compartment paneling    
2 Remove radiator Engine 601 in model 202
Engines 601, 602 in models 124, 201		 AR20.20-P-3865HA
    Engine 603 in models 124, 126, 140 AR20.20-P-3865HW
3 Remove magnetic or viscous fan clutch   ra20006010330x
    Engine 601 in model 202

4 Remove crankshaft pulley and hub   AR03.30-P-1600HW
5 Remove piston vacuum pump    
6 Remove power steering pump or tandem pump   ra46001244000x
7 Remove hydraulic pump at cylinder head    
8 Disconnect ground line at battery   AR54.10-P-0003A
9 Remove DC alternator Model 202 AR15.40-P-5032EA
10 Drain engine oil    
11 Capacitor IMPORTANT Install protective plate.  
12 Remove cylinder head cover (125) IMPORTANT In turbocharged engines and engine 601 in model 202, the charge air pipe or the air filter cross pipe must be removed before removing the cylinder head cover.  
13 Unscrew the front fuel filter hex screw (116) TORQUE SPECIFICATION  
14 Unscrew the oil dipstick guide tube bracket (62)    
15 Unscrew the hex screws (417) on the DC alternator support (416) and remove the support TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA15.40-P-1005-01E 
16 Mark installation position of TDC sensor bracket (42 and 44) and unscrew IMPORTANTInstallation:  Check TDC sensor setting, set if necessary. ra03006010345x
17 Unscrew engine stop bracket (6) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Model 201 up to 03/1985: Check engine stop, adjust if necessary. ra22006010220x
18.1 Remove left engine shock absorber (24) IMPORTANT Model 201 (up to 03/1985). ra22006010240x
18.2 Remove left and right engine shock absorber (24) IMPORTANT Model 126 ra22006010240x
19 Attach engine hoist into the engine's front lifting eye IMPORTANT Model 126

20.1 Unscrew bottom left front and right engine mounts IMPORTANT Vehicles except 4MATIC

Engine 602 in models 124, 201 as of 04/85

20.2 Unscrew left front and right engine mounts at top engine support Vehicles with 4MATIC
TORQUE SPECIFICATION The engine mount shield on the left and right are different.		 AR22.10-P-1260HX
21 Raise engine with engine hoist IMPORTANT Until oil pan hex screws are accessible.  
22 Unscrew oil pan (45) hex screws (115) in the area of the timing case TORQUE SPECIFICATION
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Slacken remaining oil pan hex screws.		 *BA01.45-P-1001-01A 
23 Lower the engine onto engine mounts again using the engine hoist    
24 Unscrew injector pump attachment hex screws (66, 67)    
25 Allen screws (115) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA01.40-P-1002-01A 
    IMPORTANT Unscrew in the timing chain case.

26 Unscrew timing case cover hex screws (35, 36)    
27 Remove timing case cover (28) IMPORTANT When removing the timing case cover, pay attention to the cylinder head gasket and the oil pan gasket. Avoid damage. Replace damaged cylinder head gasket. Clean timing case cover separating surfaces, seal cover with sealant. Check crankshaft radial sealing ring in the timing case cover and replace if necessary: ↓  
    Replace front radial sealing ring. AR03.30-P-1600HW
    Sealant optional. *BR00.45-Z-1009-01A 
    Sealant *BR00.45-Z-1012-01A 
28 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the running engine Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.		 AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
29 Run engine and check for leaks
