Soft Top Assembly: Removal
NOTE:
During removal and installation procedures the numbers in parentheses, within steps, correspond to numbers inside the illustration(s). The word arrow(s) in parentheses, within steps, is used to point out specific components or movement.
- Remove hard top if installed, see REMOVING HARD TOP under OPERATION. Remove occasional seats. See OCCASIONAL SEATS (REAR SEATS) . Remove luggage shelf. See SHELF (LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT REAR SEAT AREA) . Remove side panels.
- Protect fenders against damage with adhesive tape. See Figure .
- Remove cover. See Figure .
- With top in position (A), remove fastener screws on main bearing (arrows, 2). With top in position (B), remove fastener screws on main bearing (arrows, 2). See Fig 1 . The top positions required for removing the screws can be reached using the top switch or manually with the ignition switched in the OFF position. Ensure ignition switch is off, when removing fasteners.
- Remove bolt or pin from soft top hydraulic cylinder and press piston rod all the way in. See Figure . Before disconnecting hydraulic lines move cloth holding brace up and down a number of times to drain hydraulic cylinders.
- Disconnect plug harness connectors (S84/6x) and (S84/4x). See Fig 2 .
- Remove hydraulic lines No. 87 and 96, on left and No. 85 and 94, on right from distributors (next to top cylinders, bottom). See Fig 3 . The hydraulic lines must be plugged immediately with plugs (129 589 00 91 07), and the distributor connections with plugs (129 589 00 91 11).
- Lift top off of center pillar with aid of second mechanic and deposit in top compartment.
- Pull hydraulic lines and cables out of center pillar. See Fig 4 .
- Lift top with aid of second mechanic, have third mechanic close top compartment cover and remove top from vehicle toward rear over rear end.
NOTE:
For aid with installation mark position of fasteners. Failure to do so may require making extensive adjustments.
NOTE:
Remove ignition key to prevent unintentional actuation of top switch.
