Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WILL NOT CRANK (PYUL) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step Inspection Results Action
1 INSPECT POWER SUPPLY  Yes Go to the next step.
No Inspect the following:
  • Battery connection
  • Battery condition (Refer to [BATTERY INSPECTION ] in Service Information).
  • Fuse (See BLOWN FUSES [PYUL] ).
    • If there is any malfunction:
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location, then repeat this step.
2 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM OR OTHER 
  • Are any of the following conditions present?
    • Engine does not start completely.
    • PCM DTC P1260:00 is displayed.
Yes Both conditions present:
  • Go to Step 5.
No Either or other condition present:
  • Go to the next step.
3 INSPECT PUSH BUTTON START CONNECTOR CONNECTION 
  • Inspect the connection of push button start connector.
  • Is the push button start connector securely connected to the coil antenna?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Reconnect the push button start securely, then repeat from Step 2.
4 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OR OTHER 
  • Switch the ignition ON (engine off).
  • Verify the security indicator light.
  • Does the security indicator light flash?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Inspect the wiring harness between the following terminals:
  • Instrument cluster terminal AK-Body control module (BCM) terminal 2L
  • Instrument cluster terminal AM-Body control module (BCM) terminal 2J
  • Body control module (BCM) terminal 2H-PCM terminal 2M
  • Body control module (BCM) terminal 2F-PCM terminal 2N
    • If there is any malfunction:
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
      • Inspect the instrument cluster. (Refer to [INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INSPECTION ] in Service Information).
    • If there is any malfunction:
5 VERIFY IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM (LF CONTROL UNIT) DTC 
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the body control module (BCM). (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
(See DTC TABLE [BCM] .)
No Go to the next step.
6 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS i-stop SYSTEM OR OTHER 
  • Verify the symptom.
  • Does the engine not restart while the i-stop function is operating?
Yes Perform the symptom troubleshooting [ENGINE DOES NOT RESTART].
(See ENGINE DOES NOT RESTART [PYUL] .)
No Go to the next step.
7 VERIFY PCM DTCs 
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Continuous memory DTC is displayed:
  • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting. (See DTC TABLE [PCM (PYUL)] .)

Communication error message is displayed:
  • Go to the next step.
No Go to Step 13.
8 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN MAIN RELAY AND PCM FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
9 VERIFY MAIN RELAY FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the main relay. (Refer to [RELAY LOCATION ] in Service Information). (Refer to [RELAY INSPECTION ] in Service Information).
  • Is the part normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Replace the main relay and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [RELAY LOCATION ] in Service Information).
10 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN DLC-2 AND BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
11 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) AND PCM FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
12 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN PCM AND BODY GROUND FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
13 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS STARTER RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT OR OTHER 
  • Crank the engine.
  • Is a clicking sound heard from the starter relay?
Yes Go to Step 26.
No With shift by wire:
  • Go to Step 17. Without shift by wire:
  • Go to the next step.
14 VERIFY TCM DTCs 
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the TCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
(See DTC TABLE [TCM (NJ8A (X)-EC/NN8A (X)-EC/MM8A (X)-EC)] .)
No Go to the next step.
15 VERIFY TCM CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION .)
  • Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
16 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN PCM AND TCM FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to Step 20.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
17 VERIFY SELECTOR LEVER DTCs 
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the selector lever. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
(See DTC TABLE [ECL] .)
No Go to the next step.
18 VERIFY SELECTOR LEVER CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION .)
  • Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
19 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN PCM AND SELECTOR LEVER FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
20 VERIFY STARTER RELAY FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the starter relay. (Refer to [RELAY LOCATION ] in Service Information). (Refer to [RELAY INSPECTION ] in Service Information).
    • Is the part normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Replace the starter relay and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [RELAY LOCATION ] in Service Information).
21 VERIFY BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION .)
  • Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
22 VERIFY PCM CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION .)
  • Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
23 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN STARTER RELAY AND BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
24 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN STARTER RELAY AND PCM FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
25 VERIFY BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes With shift by wire:
  • Replace the selector lever and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to [SELECTOR LEVER INSPECTION ] in Service Information).

Without shift by wire:
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
26 VERIFY STARTER CONNECTOR FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the applicable connector and terminal. (See CONNECTOR INSPECTION .)
  • Are the connector and terminal normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
27 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS STARTER OR OTHER 
  • Verify that the starter connector is disconnected.
  • Crank the engine.
  • Measure the voltage at the starter terminal 2A (wiring harness-side).
  • Is the voltage B+?
Yes Go to Step 30.
No Go to the next step.
28 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN BATTERY AND STARTER RELAY FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
29 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN STARTER RELAY AND STARTER FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
30 INSPECT WIRING HARNESS (INCLUDING CONNECTOR/TERMINAL) BETWEEN BATTERY AND STARTER FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
31 VERIFY STARTER FOR MALFUNCTION 
  • Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to [STARTER INSPECTION ] in Service Information).
  • Is the part normal?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ] in Service Information).
32 INSPECT IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM RELATED CIRCUIT 
  • Inspect the following wiring harness and connectors:
    • Between coil antenna and LF control unit
    • Between LF control unit and body control module (BCM)
    • Between body control module (BCM) and PCM
    • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
33 VERIFY PRESENT MALFUNCTION DTC 
  • Perform the KOEO self test. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
(See DTC TABLE [PCM (PYUL)] .)
No Go to the next step.
34 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS BASE ENGINE OR OTHER 
  • Inspect for a seized drive plate.
  • Is the drive plate seized?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Base engine malfunction or engine damage during compression due to liquid (such as water, fuel, or engine oil) penetration into cylinder.
  • Replace the engine and perform the repair completion verification 1.
Repair completion verification 1 VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED 
  • Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
  • Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?
Yes Complete the symptom troubleshooting. (Explain contents of repair to customer)
No Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error.
(See MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN)] .)
  • If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1.
