Off-Vehicle Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
  • A hot transaxle and ATF can cause severe burns. Turn off the engine and wait until they are cool before replacing the ATF.
CAUTION:
  • Water or foreign material entering the connector can cause a poor connection or corrosion. Be sure not to allow water or foreign material on the connector when disconnecting.
  • Do not damage the terminals.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner component and air cleaner bracket. (See INTAKE AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  3. Place the heater pipe out of the way.
  4. Remove the under cover.
  5. Drain the ATF. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT .)
  6. Drain the engine coolant. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT .)
  7. Disconnect the lower radiator hose and place the lower radiator hose out of the way.
  8. Remove the oil hose, oil pipe and O-ring. (See OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  9. Remove the front crossmember. (See FRONT CROSSMEMBER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  10. Remove the control valve body. (See ON-VEHICLE REMOVAL .)
  11. Remove the input/turbine speed sensor. (See INPUT/TURBINE SPEED SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  12. Connect the input/turbine speed sensor terminal 2 to the battery positive terminal, connect the battery negative terminal to input/turbine speed sensor terminal 1 through an ammeter set to a resistance of 100 ohm  .

  13. Measure the current while waving a magnet back and forth over the top of the input/turbine speed sensor (less than 5 mm {0.197 in}). 
    • If there is any malfunction, replace the input/turbine speed sensor. (See INPUT/TURBINE SPEED SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)

      High 12.0-16.0
      Low 4.0-8.0
  14. Install the input/turbine speed sensor. (See INPUT/TURBINE SPEED SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  15. Install the control valve body. (See ON-VEHICLE INSTALLATION .)
  16. Apply ATF to a new O-ring and install it on the oil pipe.
  17. Install the oil pipe and oil hose. (See OIL COOLER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  18. Connect the lower radiator hose.
  19. Add the engine coolant. (See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT .)
  20. Add ATF to the specified level. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT .)
  21. Install the front crossmember. (See FRONT CROSSMEMBER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  22. Install the under cover.
  23. Install the air cleaner component and air cleaner bracket. (See INTAKE AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  24. Perform the mechanical system test. (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST .)
