Converter Housing Removal/Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Drain the ATF. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) REPLACEMENT .)
- Remove the transaxle. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Clean the transaxle. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE CLEANING .)
- Remove the torque converter. (See TORQUE CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Remove the stud bolts.
- Set the SSTs
as shown in the figure.
CAUTION:
- When installing the SST to the transaxle, use bolts (M12x1.25) with a thread length of 90 mm {3.5 in}.
- Install the SST to the position where the transaxle stud bolts were removed.
- Remove the oil pipe component and O-rings.
- Refer to the "Automatic Transaxle Disassembly/assembly Precaution" before disassembling/assembling the transaxle. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY PRECAUTION .)
- Remove the bolts as shown in the figure.
- Using a plastic hammer, tap the converter housing to remove it.
CAUTION:
- Do not damage the fitting surface of the converter housing and the transaxle case.
- Remove the transaxle case gaskets as shown in the figure.
- Remove the gaskets as shown in the figure.
- Clean the contact surface of the transaxle case and the converter housing and the bolt holes.NOTE:
- Completely remove sealant and oil with white gasoline or equivalent.
- Install the gaskets as shown in the figure.
- Install the transaxle case gaskets as shown in the figure.
- Apply sealant to the converter housing as shown in the figure.
NOTE:
- Spread sealant over the contact surface.
- Do not apply sealant to the transaxle case.
- Install the converter housing before the applied sealant starts to harden.
CAUTION:
- Do not damage the O-ring on the oil pump component.
- Do not damage the oil seal (differential). (converter housing side)
NOTE:- Tap all around the contact surface with a plastic hammer during installation.
- Temporarily tighten the bolts by hand as shown in the figure.

Tightening torque
- A, B, C: 24-35 N.m {2.5-3.5 kgf.m, 18-25 ft.lbf}
- D, E: 30- 41 N.m {3.1- 4.1 kgf.m, 23-30 ft.lbf}
- Install the oil pipe component and O-rings.
- Remove the SSTs .
- Install the stud bolts using double nutted.
CAUTION:
- Do not repair the threads using a tap or other tools.
- Do not damage the transaxle case.
- Do not overtighten the stud bolts. (The stud bolts should remain protruded from the end of the transaxle case more than 47 mm {1.9 in}.)
- If any of the stud bolts is overtightened, the transaxle case may be damaged (holes in the case may result).
- If the transaxle case is damaged, the transaxle must be replaced.
- Remove the double nutted from the stud bolts.
- Install the torque converter. (See TORQUE CONVERTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Install the transaxle. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
- Add ATF. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) LEVEL ADJUSTMENT .)
- Adjust the ATF level. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID (ATF) LEVEL ADJUSTMENT .)
- Perform the "Mechanical System Test". (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST .)
