Diagnostic procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED
  • Has FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Record FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.
2 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY
  • Verify related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability
  • Is any related Service Bulletins available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available Service Bulletins
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step
No Go to the next step.
3 INSPECT THE VOLTAGE AND GROUND CIRCUITS TO THE ELECTRONIC FUEL PUMP RELAY
  • Switch the ignition off
  • Disconnect the electronic fuel pump relay connector
  • Switch the ignition to ON (Engine off)
  • Measure the voltage between electronic fuel pump relay terminal G and A (wiring harness-side)
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 V?
Yes Go to Step 8.
No Go to the next step.
4 INSPECT THE VOLTAGE TO ELECTRONIC FUEL PUMP RELAY
  • Measure the voltage between electronic fuel pump relay terminal G (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 V?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Go to Step 6.
5 INSPECT ELECTRONIC FUEL PUMP RELAY GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT IN WIRING HARNESS
  • Switch the ignition off
  • Measure the resistance between electronic fuel pump relay terminal A (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Unable to duplicate or identify the concern at this time
No Repair for an open circuit, then go to Step 13
6 INSPECT FUEL PUMP RELAY FOR CORRECT OPERATION
  • Switch the ignition off
  • Disconnect the fuel pump relay connector
  • Inspect the fuel pump relay

    (See RELAY INSPECTION )

  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Replace the fuel pump relay, then go to Step 13
(See RELAY LOCATION )
No Go to the next step.
7 INSPECT POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT IN WIRING HARNESS
  • Measure the voltage between fuel pump relay (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 V?
Yes Go to Step 5.
No A power supply circuit concern is present
Inspect the condition of the related fuse/fuse links.
  • If the fuse is normal, repair for an open circuit
  • If the fuse/fuse link is damaged, inspect the circuit for a 1 short to ground before installing a new fuse/fuse link.

Go to Step 13.
8 INSPECT FUEL PUMP MONITOR CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT IN WIRING HARNESS
  • Switch the ignition off
  • Disconnect the PCM connector
  • Measure the resistance between electronic fuel pump relay terminal D (wiring harness-side) and PCM terminal 1H (wiring harness-side)
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair for an open circuit, then go to Step 13
9 INSPECT FUEL PUMP MONITOR CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Measure the resistance between electronic fuel pump relay terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is the resistance greater than 10 kilohms?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair for a short circuit, then go to Step 13.
10 INSPECT FUEL PUMP MONITOR CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Measure the voltage between electronic fuel pump relay terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is any voltage present?
Yes Repair for a short circuit, then go to Step 13.
No Go to the next step.
11 INSPECT FUEL PUMP MONITOR CIRCUIT FOR CORRECT RESPONSE
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Connect the PCM connector
  • Switch the ignition to ON (Engine off).
  • Measure the voltage between electronic fuel pump relay terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 V?
Yes Replace the electronic fuel pump relay, then go to Step 13.
No Go to the next step.
12 INSPECT FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the PCM connectors
  • Visually inspect for
    • Pushed out pins
    • Corrosion
  • Connect all the PCM connectors and verify that they seat correctly.
  • Retrieve DTCs using the M-MDS
  • Is the same DTC present?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
(The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.)
13 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC U0109:00, U0109:01, U0109:02 HAVE BEEN COMPLETED
  • Verify that all disconnected connectors are reconnected.
  • Switch the ignition to ON (Engine off).
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS
  • Perform the KOER self-test.

    (See KOEO/KOER SELF TEST [MZI-3.7] .)

  • Is the same DTC present?
Yes Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
(See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZI-3.7] .)
No Go to the next step.
14 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE
Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
(See DTC TABLE [MZI-3.7] .)
