Diagnostic procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY FREEZE FRAME DATA HAS BEEN RECORDED 
  • Has FREEZE FRAME DATA been recorded?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Record FREEZE FRAME DATA on the repair order, then go to the next step.
2 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY 
  • Verify related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability
  • Is any related Service Bulletins available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available Service Bulletins
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
3 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION 
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Disconnect fan control module connector.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged, pulled-out pins, corrosion, etc.)
  • Are there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace suspected part, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step
4 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Switch the ignition ON (Engine off).
  • Measure voltage between the following circuits:
    • Fan control module terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Are there voltage B+?
Yes Go to the next step
No Inspect FAN fuse
  • If there is deterioration or breakage, replace the fuse.
  • If it has melted, repair for a short to the ground circuit between the FAN fuse and fan control module terminal D

After repair, go to Step 10.
5 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Inspect for continuity between the following circuits
    • Fan control module terminal A (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Are there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step
No Repair for an open circuit, then go to Step 10.
6 INSPECT FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER 
  • Switch the ignition ON (Engine off)
  • Measure the voltage between the following circuits:
    • Fan control module terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Are there voltage B+  ?
Yes Repair for a short to the power circuit, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
7 INSPECT FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Inspect continuity between the following circuits
    • Fan control module terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Are there continuity?
Yes Repair for a short to the ground circuit, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
8 INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR FOR POOR CONNECTION 
  • Switch the ignition off
  • Disconnect PCM connector
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace suspected part, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step
9 INSPECT FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Inspect continuity between the following circuits
    • Fan control module terminal C (wiring harness-side) and PCM terminal 1BR (wiring harness-side)
  • Are there continuity?
Yes Replace the fan control module, then go to the next step.
No Repair for open circuit, then go to the next step
10 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTC P0480:00 HAS BEEN COMPLETED 
  • Verify that all disconnected connectors reconnected
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
  • Perform the "KOEO or KOER self-test"

    (See KOEO/KOER SELF TEST [MZI-3.7] .)

  • Are any DTCs present?
Yes Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
(See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZI-3.7] .)
No Go to the next step.
11 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE 
Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection.

No Troubleshooting completed


STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY 
  • Verify related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability.
  • Is any related repair information available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
2 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Remove the fan control module relay.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step.
3 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND OR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Switch the ignition to ON (engine off).
  • Measure the voltage between fan control module relay (battery side) and body ground
  • Is the voltage B+  ?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Inspect the MAIN 125 A fuse and FAN 60A fuse.
  • If the fuse is melt
    • Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground
    • Replace the fuse.
  • If the fuse is deterioration:
    • Replace the fuse
  • If the fuse is normal:
    • Replace or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit.

Go to Step 17.
4 INSPECT WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS IN FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONTROL SIGNAL OR ELSEWHERE 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Switch the ignition to off
  • Inspect the fan control module relay (BCM side) terminal voltage
  • Is the voltage B+  ?
Yes Go to Step 7.
No Go to the next step.
5 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Disconnect the BCM connector
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module relay (BCM side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step.
6 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Disconnect the BCM connector
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module relay (BCM side) and BCM terminal 7B
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Replace the BCM
(See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
Go to Step 17.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
7 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY 
  • Inspect the fan control module relay.

    (See RELAY INSPECTION .)

  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Replace the fan control module relay, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step
8 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Disconnect the fan control module connector.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step
9 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Disconnect the fan control module connector
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step
10 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module terminal D (wiring harness-side) and fan control module relay
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
11 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Disconnect the fan control module connector.
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module terminal A (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
12 INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Disconnect the PCM connector
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step
13 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Disconnect the fan control module connector.
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step
14 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER SUPPLY 
  • Disconnect the fan control module connector.
  • Measure the voltage between fan control module terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there any voltage?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to power supply, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step.
15 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Disconnect the fan control module connector
  • Disconnect the PCM connector.
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module terminal C (wiring harness-side) and PCM terminal 1R (wiring harness-side).
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
16 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE 
Yes Replace the fan control module, then go to the next step.
(See COOLING FAN COMPONENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZI-3.7] .)
No Go to the next step.
17 VERIFY DTC TROUBLESHOOTING COMPLETED 
  • Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors
  • Install the fuses
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS
  • Perform the KOEO/KOER self test

    (See KOEO/KOER SELF TEST [MZI-3.7] )

  • Is the same DTC present?
Yes Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.

No Go to the next step.
18 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE 
Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection
(See DTC TABLE [MZI-3.7] .)
No DTC troubleshooting completed
