  • Engine stops unexpectedly at beginning of deceleration or recovery from deceleration

PINPOINT TEST 6 LOW IDLE / STALLS DURING DECELERATION
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Vacuum lines (routing, leaks)
    • Idle air control (connections)
    • Intake air tubes
    • Wiring connections
  • Are all checks OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required. Verify symptom no longer exists.
2 DOES THE ENGINE IDLE ROUGH?
  • Does the engine idle rough? 
Yes See ENGINE POOR DRIVEABILITY  .
No Go to next step.
3 IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) CHECK
  • Start engine and let idle.
  • Note RPM.
  • While checking for rpm drop or engine stall, disconnect IAC valve.
  • Does RPM drop or engine stall? 
Yes Go to next step.
No For A/T vehicles: Go to next step. For M/T vehicles: Go to step 5.
4 CHECK TRANSMISSION (FOR A/T WITH STALLS/QUITS ON DECELERATION) Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required.
5 FOR LOW IDLE WITH A/C ON, CHECK ACCS PID
NOTE:
  • This test step will determine if the PCM is receiving the ACCS signal.
  • Connect WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Start engine.
  • Turn A/C on (verify A/C clutch engages).
  • Monitor ACCS PID.
  • Key OFF, A/C off.
  • Is ACCS PID ON with the A/C clutch engaged? 
Yes ACCS input is OK. Go to next step.
No ACCS input fault. Go to step 7. See A/C CLUTCH RELAY (ACCR) MALFUNCTION .
6 CHECK FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Yes Go to next step.
No If pressure is greater than 448 kPa (71 psi) for 3.0L/4.0L or 380 kPa (55 psi) for 2.3L: Replace fuel pump module. See FUEL PUMP REMOVAL / INSTALLATION . If pressure is less than 207 kPa (30 psi) for 3.0L/4.0L or 240 kPa (35 psi) for 2.3L: Check fuel supply line for restriction.
7 CHECK FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Yes Check injector for leakage. See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 11: FUEL INJECTOR INSPECTION . If injector leaks, replace injector. See FUEL INJECTION SUPPLY MANIFOLD AND FUEL INJECTOR - 2.3L REMOVAL / INSTALLATION or see FUEL INJECTION SUPPLY MANIFOLD AND FUEL INJECTOR - 3.0L REMOVAL / INSTALLATION or see FUEL INJECTION SUPPLY MANIFOLD AND FUEL INJECTOR - 4.0L REMOVAL / INSTALLATION . If injector OK, Go to next step.
No Check fuel supply line for restriction.
8 ADDITIONAL CHECKS Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required. Verify symptom no longer exists.
9 VERIFY TEST RESULTS
  • Are test results OK? 
Yes Troubleshooting complete.
No Service any additional symptoms. See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE DRIVEABILITY  .
