Automatic Transmission Pinpoint Test 32: Torque Converter Operation Concerns: Clutch Always Applies / Stalls Vehicle

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PINPOINT TEST 32 CHART - TORQUE CONVERTER OPERATION CONCERNS (CLUTCH ALWAYS APPLIES / STALLS VEHICLE)

PINPOINT TEST 32 TORQUE CONVERTER OPERATION CONCERNS: CLUTCH ALWAYS APPLIES / STALLS VEHICLE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 POWERTRAIN CONTROL SYSTEM

Perform TCC tests. Run on-board diagnostics.

See ON - BOARD DIAGNOSTIC TESTS , .

  • Do any of the following problems exist? 
  • Low engine idle.
  • Faulty electrical inputs/outputs, vehicle wiring harnesses, internal transmission wiring harnesses, PCM, TCC.
Yes Verify engine idle speed is within specification.
See SHIFT SOLENOIDS SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) SOLENOID 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY , . Repair as required, clear DTCs, road test and rerun on-board diagnostics.
No Go to step 2.
2 CONTROL VALVE BODY
  • Do any of the following problems exist? 
  • Screws not tightened to specification.
  • Gasket damaged, off location.
  • Separator plate damaged.
  • TCC, solenoid stuck, damaged, O-ring damaged or out of bore.
  • TCC solenoid and valve, TCC control valve, spring, damaged, missing, misassembled, stuck, bore damaged.
  • Verify correct solenoid and control spool operation.
Yes Tighten screws to specification.
Inspect and replace gasket.
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.
Inspect for damage. If damaged, replace control valve body. If parts are missing, replace missing parts or control valve body. If misassembled, reassemble properly. Do not stone, file, or sand valves. This removes the anodized finish and result in further control valve body or transmission damage.
Repair or replace as necessary.
No Go to step 3.
3 TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
  • Does the following problem exist? 
  • Torque converter internal malfunction preventing lockup piston application.
Yes Remove transmission.
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL / INSTALLATION , . Inspect for damage. Replace torque converter if required.
No Go to SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION , .
