Manual Transmission Extension Housing Removal/Installation

- Disconnect the negative battery cable; see BATTERY CABLES REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, raise and support the vehicle; see LIFTING .
- On 4x4 vehicles, remove the transfer case; see TRANSFER CASE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
- Drain the transmission fluid.NOTE:
- To maintain initial propeller shaft balance, mark the propeller shaft centering socket yoke and rear axle universal joint flange so they may be installed in their original positions.
- Mark the propeller centering socket yoke and rear axle universal joint flange.
- Remove and support the rear propeller shaft.
- Use a transmission jack to support the transmission.
- Remove the transmission mount to cross-member nuts.
- Remove the six crossmember bolts.
- Remove the nuts, then remove the crossmember.
- Remove the transmission bolt and reposition the exhaust bracket.
- Lower the transmission to access extension housing bolts.
- Use SST to remove the extension housing rear oil seal.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the extension housing.
- Apply a small bead of silicone to the surface of the case.NOTE:
- The extension housing must be installed within four minutes after applying silicone.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Use SST to install the extension housing seal.
- Add specified amount of transmission oil; See MANUAL TRANSMISSION OIL REPLACEMENT .
- Warm up the engine and transmission, inspect for oil leakage and inspect transmission operation.
