Manual Transmission/Clutch Pinpoint Test 7: Excessive Noise

MANUAL TRANSMISSION/CLUTCH PINPOINT TEST 7: EXCESSIVE NOISE

PINPOINT TEST 1 CLUTCH SLIPPAGE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 TRANSMISSION NEUTRAL GEAR ROLLOVER TEST
  • Start the engine and let it idle with the transmission in NEUTRAL and the clutch engaged (pedal up). If noise is excessive, depress the clutch pedal to stop the transmission input shaft from rotating.
  • Does the noise stop when the clutch pedal is depressed? 
Yes Inspect the clutch components for damage.
See CLUTCH DISC INSPECTION .
No Go to step 2.
2 CHECK THE CLUTCH SYSTEM
  • Key Off.
  • Using slow, medium, then fast strokes, depress and release the clutch pedal.
  • Is there a squeak? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No The clutch system is OK. VERIFY customer concern.
3 CHECK THE STARTER INTERLOCK SWITCH
  • Remove the starter interlock switch. Using slow, medium, then fast strokes, depress and release the clutch pedal.
  • Is there a squeak? 
Yes REINSTALL the starter interlock switch. Go to step 4.
No INSTALL a new starter interlock switch. See SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
4 CHECK CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER
Yes Replace the clutch slave cylinder.
See CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
No Go to step 5.
5 CHECK PILOT BEARING
  • Inspect the pilot bearing for damage.
  • Is the pilot bearing OK? 
Yes Go to step 6.
No Replace the pilot bearing.
See PILOT BEARING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
6 CHECK TORSION SPRINGS
  • Inspect the torsion springs for fatigue or breakage.

    See CLUTCH DISC INSPECTION .

  • Are there any signs of fatigue or breakage? 
Yes Replace the clutch disc.
See CLUTCH DISC AND COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
No Inspect the crankshaft end play.
