Instrument Cluster Pinpoint Test 3: Incorrect Oil Pressure Warning Lamp Indication

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PINPOINT TEST 3 - INCORRECT OIL PRESSURE WARNING LAMP INDICATION

PINPOINT TEST 3 OIL PRESSURE GAUGE INDICATION INCORRECT
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE WARNING LAMP
NOTE:
  • For proper operation of the oil pressure gauge, verify the engine oil is at the proper level and the connector is securely mated to the oil pressure switch. During hard braking, a momentary drop in oil pressure is normal.

  • Key in START position
  • Check the oil pressure warning lamp.
  • Does the warning lamp illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Go to step 2.
2 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE WARNING LAMP (Key ON. - ENGINE OFF)
  • Key ON. (engine not running)
  • Check the oil pressure warning lamp.
  • Is the oil pressure warning lamp off? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No System OK.
3 CHECK THE INPUT SIGNAL TO THE OIL PRESSURE WARNING LAMP
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect instrument cluster connector 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 7, circuit, DG/W, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less then 1000 ohms? 
Yes Install a new warning indicator bulb. See INDICATOR/WARNING BULB REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 4.
4 CHECK CIRCUIT DG/W FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect oil pressure switch connector 0922-103.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 7, circuit DG/W, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Replace the oil pressure sensor.

See OIL PRESSURE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 3.0L .
See OIL PRESSURE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 4.0L .
Test the system for normal operation.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
5 CHECK THE OIL PRESSURE WARNING INDICATOR (NORMAL)
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect oil pressure switch 0922-103.
  • Key ON.
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the oil pressure switch 0922-103 pin 1, circuit DG/W, harness side and ground.
  • Check the oil pressure warning lamp.
  • Is the oil pressure warning lamp OFF? 
Yes Replace the oil pressure sensor.

See OIL PRESSURE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION - 4.0L .
Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 6.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT DG/W FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect instrument cluster connector 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 7, circuit DG/W, harness side and the oil pressure switch 0922-103 pin 1, circuit DG/W, harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Replace the instrument cluster.
See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. Test the system for normal operation.
