Illumination Source Inoperative - One Or More Illumination Sources

PINPOINT TEST 5 - ILLUMINATION SOURCE INOPERATIVE - ONE OR MORE ILLUMINATION SOURCES

PINPOINT TEST 5 ILLUMINATION SOURCE INOPERATIVE - ONE OR MORE ILLUMINATION SOURCES
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE INOPERATIVE ILLUMINATION SOURCE
  • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
  • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
  • Observe the illumination.
  • Is one or more illumination source inoperative? 
Yes See ILLUMINATION INOPERATIVE - CONTROL .
No If the headlamp switch illumination is inoperative, Go to step 2.
If the four-wheel drive switch illumination is inoperative, Go to step 4.
If the fog lamp switch illumination is inoperative, Go to step 6.
If the speed control switch(es) illumination is inoperative, Go to step 8.
2 CHECK FOR POWER AT THE HEADLAMP SWITCH ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT
  • Disconnect the Headlamp Switch 0918-103.
  • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
  • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
  • Measure the voltage between the headlamp switch 0918-103 pin 9, circuit LB/R, harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
3 CHECK FOR GROUND AT THE HEADLAMP SWITCH ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT
  • Measure the resistance between the headlamp switch 0918-103 pin 7, circuit B, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Replace the main light switch.
See MAIN LIGHT SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
Test the system for normal operation.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
4 CHECK FOR POWER TO THE FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SWITCH ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT
  • Disconnect the Four-Wheel Drive Switch 0318-01.
  • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
  • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
  • Measure the voltage between the four-wheel drive switch 0318-01 pin 1, circuit LB/R, harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
5 CHECK FOR GROUND AT THE FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SWITCH
  • Measure the resistance between the four-wheel drive switch 0318-01 pin 4, circuit B, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Install a new four-wheel drive switch. Test the system for normal operation.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK THE GROUND
  • Disconnect the Fog Lamp Switch 0918-401
  • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
  • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
  • Measure the voltage between the fog lamp switch 0918-401 pin 5, circuit LB/R, harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
7 CHECK FOR GROUND AT THE FOG LAMP SWITCH ILLUMINATION CIRCUIT
  • Measure the resistance between the fog lamp switch 0918-401 pin 4, circuit B, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Install a new fog lamp switch. Test the system for normal operation.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
8 CHECK THE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR SWITCH ILLUMINATION
  • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
  • Rotate the instrument panel dimmer switch to the full illumination position.
  • Observe both speed control actuator switches.
  • Are both speed control actuator switches illumination inoperative? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Install new cruise control actuator switches. Test the system for normal operation.
9 CHECK FOR POWER TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCHES
  • Remove the driver side air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
  • Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
  • Install the Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F088 (105-R0012) to the Driver Air Bag Module Electrical Connectors.
  • Connect the battery.
  • Disconnect the Upper Air Bag Siding Contact Connector
  • Place the headlamp switch in the PARK position.
  • Measure the voltage between the upper air bag sliding contact connector terminal 2 and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Go to step 12.
10 CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT
  • Measure the resistance between upper air bag sliding contact terminal 5 and steering column ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Install new cruise control actuator switches.
Test the system for normal operation.
DISCONNECT the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT . Install the driver air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
No Go to step 11.
11 CHECK FOR GROUND TO THE AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT
  • Disconnect the Air Bag Siding Contact 0922-202
  • Measure the resistance between the air bag sliding contact 0922-202 pin 2, circuit B/W, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 13.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
DISCONNECT the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT . Install the driver air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
12 CHECK FOR POWER TO THE AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT
  • Measure the voltage between the air bag sliding contact 0922-202 pin 5, circuit LB/R, harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Install a new air bag sliding contact. See AIR BAG SLIDING CONTACT (CLOCKSPRING) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
DISCONNECT the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT . Install the driver air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
DISCONNECT the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT . Install the driver air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
13 CHECK THE GROUND
  • Inspect the steering wheel control switch harness for shorts, opens or any damage.
  • Is the steering wheel control switch harness OK? 
Yes Install a new steering wheel control switch(es).
Test the system for normal operation.
DISCONNECT the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT . Install the driver air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
No Install a new steering wheel control switch harness. Test the system for normal operation. DISCONNECT the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT . Install the driver air bag. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
