DTC 22: Fuel Level Signal

  1. Using manufacturer's instructions, connect Mazda Fuel & Thermometer Checker (49 N088 0A0). Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect cable. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON position 3 times. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Press odometer/tripmeter button 3 times. Using odometer/tripmeter button, select DTC 22. If LCD indicates 000 or 255, go to step  5 . If LCD indicates any code between 001-254, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect fuel pump harness connector. Connect Red lead of Mazda Fuel & Thermometer Checker to fuel pump harness connector terminal "B" and Black lead to ground. See Figure . Set rheostat on checker to 10 ohms. If LCD indicates 027-032, go to next step. If LCD does not indicate 027-032, replace fuel gauge and retest system.
  3. With Mazda Fuel & Thermometer Checker connected as in previous step, set rheostat on checker to 55 ohms. If LCD indicates 105-111, go to next step. If LCD does not indicate 105-111, replace fuel gauge and retest system.
  4. With Mazda Fuel & Thermometer Checker connected as in step 2)  , set rheostat on checker to 100 ohms. If LCD indicates 143-149, go to next step. If LCD does not indicate 143-149, replace fuel gauge and retest system.
  5. Remove and check fuel gauge sending unit. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT TEST  under COMPONENT TESTS. If sending unit is okay, check wiring harness between instrument cluster and fuel gauge sending unit for short or open. If wiring harness is okay, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If sending unit is faulty, replace sending unit and retest system.
