Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle connector No. 1 (12-pin). See Figure. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  13.
  4. Inspect resistance of reduction timing solenoid at transaxle connector No. 1. If resistance is okay, go to step  9. If resistance is not okay, go to next step.
  5. Remove the control valve body cover. Disconnect coupler connector (10-pin). Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair connector terminals, then go to step  13.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and terminal "I" on coupler connector (10-pin). Is resistance within 14-18 ohms? If yes, repair or replace transaxle connector (component side), then go to step  13. If no, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect reduction timing solenoid connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  13.
  8. Inspect resistance of reduction timing solenoid at component connector. Measure resistance between ground and solenoid component terminal. Resistance should be 14-18 ohms. Measure resistance between ground and solenoid component terminal. Resistance should be 14-18 ohms. If resistance is okay, repair or replace coupler connector (10-pin) (component side), then go to step  13. If resistance is not okay, verify reduction timing solenoid installation. If reduction timing solenoid is installed correctly, replace reduction timing solenoid, then go to step  13.
  9. Disconnect TCM connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair terminals, then go to step  13.
  10. Check continuity between following terminals:
    • Transaxle connector No. 1 terminal "E" and TCM terminal 2G.

    Is there continuity? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to step  13.

  11. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Check voltage at terminal "E" on transaxle connector No. 1 (harness side). Is voltage zero volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to step  13.
  12. Check continuity between following terminals:
    • TCM terminal 2G and ground.

    Is there continuity? If yes, repair or replace harness, then go to next step. If no, go to next step.

  13. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Drive vehicle in "D" range and make sure that gears shift smoothly from 1st to 5th. Is same DTC present? If yes, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, repair is complete.
