Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check ATF condition. If ATF is contaminated with water or deteriorated, replace fluid and go to next step. If ATF condition is okay, go to next step.
  4. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Check ATF level. See appropriate SERVICING article. Add fluid as necessary. If ATF level is okay, go to next step.
  5. Perform line pressure test in all gears. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS. If line pressure is within specification for all gears, go to next step. If line pressure is low in all or any gears, repair as needed, then go to step  10. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle connector No. 1 (12-pin). See Figure. Apply battery voltage to following terminals on component side of transaxle connector No. 1:
    • Terminal "B" for TCC solenoid valve.
    • Terminal "D" for pressure control valve.

    Verify the click sounds of TCC solenoid valve and pressure control solenoid. If click sounds are heard, go to next step. If click sounds are not heard, replace suspect solenoid. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to step  10.

  7. Inspect difference between engine speed and turbine speed during TCC operation in 5th gear. Drive vehicle under following conditions:
    • TR switch position: "D" range.
    • Gear position: 5th gear.
    • TCC solenoid valve: ON.

    Difference should be below 99 RPM. Is difference between engine speed (RPM PID) and turbine speed okay? If yes, go to step  10. If no, go to next step.

  8. Remove control valve body. See appropriate SERVICING article. Disassemble control valve body. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. Is each valve operation okay and is return spring okay? If yes, replace torque converter, then go to next step. If no, replace control valve body, then go to next step.
  9. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Warm up transaxle. Drive vehicle under following conditions for 10 seconds or more:
    • Vehicle speed (VSS PID): 6-54 MPH.
    • Gear position: 5th gear.
    • TR switch position: "D" range.
    • TCC solenoid valve: ON.

    Is there a pending code present? If yes, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, go to next step.

  10. Start the engine. Warm up engine and transaxle. Drive vehicle under the following conditions for 10 seconds or more:
    • Vehicle speed (VSS PID): 47 MPH.
    • Gearshift lever position: "D" range TCC operating.

    Gradually slow down and stop vehicle. Ensure repaired DTC does not reoccur.
