Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Using voltmeter to backprobe TCM connector, measure voltage at TCM terminal 1F. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Is TCM terminal voltage 0.2-4.9 volts? If yes, problem may be intermittent. Check all applicable connections. Perform wiggle test on applicable wiring harnesses. Repair as necessary. Go to step  8. If no, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Inspect transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin) connection. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion etc.). Are connector and terminals okay? If no, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  11. If yes, go to next step.
  5. Using voltmeter to backprobe TCM connector, measure voltage at TCM terminal 1F. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Connect jumper wire between terminal "H" and "G" on transaxle harness connector No. 2. Verify if TCM terminal voltage changes to 0.2 volts or less. Does TCM terminal voltage change? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove control valve body cover. Disconnect coupler connector (8-pin). Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If no, repair or replace terminals, then go to step  11. If yes, go to next step.
  7. Check continuity between coupler connector (8-pin) terminals "I" and "J" (component side). Is there continuity? If yes, repair or replace transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin). If no, replace TFT sensor. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to step  11.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM connector. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair terminals and go to step  11.
  9. Disconnect transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin). See Figure. Connect TCM connector. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Inspect voltage at terminal "G" on transaxle harness connector No. 2. Is voltage 5 volts? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to step  11.
  10. Turn ignition off. Check continuity between transaxle connector No. 2 (8-pin) terminal "H" (harness side) and body ground. Is there continuity? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair or replace harness, then go to next step.
  11. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Drive vehicle for 150 seconds or more. Is same DTC present? If yes, replace TCM. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, repair is complete.
