Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Has FREEZE FRAME PID DATA been recorded? If yes, go to next step. If no, record FREEZE FRAME PID DATA on repair order, then go to next step.
  2. Check for related service bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability. Is any related repair information available? If no, go to next step. If yes, perform repair or diagnosis according to available repair information. If vehicle is still not repaired, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.) at TR switch. Are switch terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair terminals, then go to step  12.
  4. Using voltmeter, backprobe TCM connector. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Inspect TCM terminal voltages for TR switch. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . Are any TR switch terminal voltages turned on for even a moment while shifting gearshift lever slowly from "P" position to "2" range? If yes, adjust TR switch. See appropriate SERVICING article. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.) at all applicable connectors. Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair terminals, then go to step  12.
  6. Disconnect TR switch connector. Connect voltmeter between ground and appropriate TCM terminal. Turn ignition key to ON position (engine OFF). Connect harness side connector power supply line and signal line using jumper wire. See TR SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST  table. Inspect if terminal voltage changes. Does terminal voltage change from zero to battery voltage when jumper wire is connected? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9.
    TR SWITCH VOLTAGE TEST

Gearshift Lever Position Jumper TR Switch Terminals Voltage At TCM Terminal
    P C & A 2B
    R C & E 1W
    N C & D 1T
    D C & G 1Z
    3 C & I 1AA
    2 C & F 2C
  7. Inspect TR switch for continuity in all ranges. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. Is there continuity between TR switch component terminals? If yes, go to step  12. If no, replace TR switch. See appropriate SERVICING article. Go to next step.
  8. Check voltage at TR switch harness connector terminal "C". Is there battery voltage at TR switch terminal "C"? If yes, go to next step. If no, inspect METER fuse No. 22 (15-amp). Replace as needed. If fuse is okay, check power supply circuit to fuse. Repair as needed and go to step  12.
  9. Turn ignition off. Check for poor connection (damaged or pulled-out terminals, corrosion, etc.). Are terminals okay? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair as needed and go to step  12.
  10. Check continuity between TR switch harness connector terminals and TCM harness connector terminals. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Is there continuity? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair suspect circuit as needed and go to step  12.
  11. Check continuity between TCM harness connector terminals and body ground. Is there continuity? If no, go to next step. If yes, repair suspect circuit as needed and go to step  12.
  12. Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors. Clear DTC from memory using scan tool or equivalent. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Drive vehicle in each gearshift range ("R", "D", "3" and "2") for 100 seconds or more. Allow vehicle to idle in "P" and "N" position for 100 seconds or more. Is there a pending code present? If yes, replace TCM, then go to next step. See TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no, go to next step.
  13. Start the engine. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Depress the brake pedal, and move the gearshift lever between "P" and "2" for 100 seconds or more. Is there any DTC present? If yes, go to applicable DTC test. If no, repair is complete.
