Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda Millenia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access ATFT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If ATFT V PID is 3.4-3.6 volts, leave scan tool connected to DLC and in PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD mode, and go to next step. If ATFT V PID is not 3.4-3.6 volts, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Road test vehicle at 37 MPH or more for more than 7 minutes. Using scan tool, monitor ATFT and ATFT V PID. When ATFT PID value is 68°F (20°C), ATFT V PID value should be 3.4-3.6 volts. When ATFT PID value is 266°F (130°C), ATFT V PID value should be 0.4-0.5 volt. If ATFT V PID value does not change as specified, disconnect transaxle 10-pin harness connector and check connector for corrosion. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If ATFT V PID value changes as specified, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step.
  3. Ensure engine coolant temperature has decreased to 68°F (20°C) or less. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access VS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle with VS PID value at 37 MPH for more than 7 minutes. Determine if DTC P0711 is still present. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If serviced DTC resets, replace PCM. If DTC does not reset, repair is complete.
