Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda Millenia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access ATFT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If ATFT V PID is .1-4.9 volts, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. If ATFT V PID is 4.9 volts or more, leave scan tool connected to DLC and go to next step. If ATFT V PID is .1 volt or less, leave scan tool connected to DLC and go to step  5.
  2. Ensure all appropriate connections between TFT sensor and PCM are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Disconnect transaxle 10-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor ATFT V PID while connecting a jumper wire between transaxle harness connector terminals "I" and "J". See Figure. ATFT V PID should change from 4.9 volts or more to .1 volt or less when jumper wire is connected. If ATFT V PID changes as specified, go to next step. If ATFT V PID does not change as specified, leave transaxle 10-pin harness connector disconnected and go to step  4.
  3. Turn ignition off. Remove transaxle valve body cover. Disconnect TFT sensor connector. Check TFT sensor connector for damage or pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair connector or replace TFT sensor as necessary. If okay, check for continuity in TFT sensor circuits between transaxle connector (component side) and TFT sensor. If continuity exists, replace TFT sensor. If continuity does not exist, repair or replace internal transaxle wiring harness.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Check PCM connector for damage or pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. If okay, reconnect PCM connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and transaxle harness connector terminal "I". See Figure. If voltage is not 5 volts, repair open in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is 5 volts, turn ignition switch to OFF position and check for continuity between chassis ground and transaxle harness connector terminal "J". If continuity exists, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transaxle 10-pin harness connector. Check transaxle connector (component side) for damage or pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, access ATFT V PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. If ATFT V PID changed to 4.9 volts or more when transaxle connector is disconnected, go to next step. If ATFT V PID does not change to 4.9 volts or more when transaxle connector is disconnected, turn ignition switch to OFF position and check for continuity between chassis ground and transaxle harness connector terminal "I". If continuity exists, repair short to ground in affected circuit between PCM and transaxle. If continuity does not exist, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove transaxle valve body cover. Disconnect TFT sensor connector. Check TFT sensor connector for damage or pulled out terminals or corrosion. Repair connector or replace TFT sensor as necessary, then go to next step. If okay, check for continuity in TFT sensor circuits between chassis ground and TFT sensor harness connector terminals "A" and "B". If continuity exists at either point, repair short to ground in affected circuit or replace internal transaxle wiring harness, then go to next step. If continuity does not exist at either point, replace TFT sensor for internal short to ground. Go to next step.
  7. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access VS PID from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle with VS PID value at 12 MPH for at least 2 minutes. Determine if DTC P0710 is still present. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If serviced DTC resets, replace PCM. If DTC does not reset, repair is complete.
